Well I never said any man that quilts is gay...I know alot of men who quilt and knit and non of them are gay...or most of them are not anyway...there is a man I know from a quilt shop...his wife was a avid quilter and he was an engineer..she was always asking him to figure things out for her..so finally he decided to start quilting with her...they did that for years...she died from cancer a few years ago and he didn't have to heart to quilt without her for a couple years..but now he is back at it and does some amazing work..when he travels he prearranges to make it to quilt classes where he is going to learn new techniques..he can show off any woman I ever met..then there are a couple men in the same town...they have never used a rotary cutter or sewing machine...they are in their 60's..both of them were taught to sew as young boys and never had sewing machines...they figured if they didn't need it then they don't need it now...they do amazing work..the one man has macular degentration now so he is sending his quilts to a longarmer to have them quilted as he just can't see to do that anymore...I think men can out quilt any woman...and yes I am a woman...but they usually think with the engineering side of the brain moreso than most woman..not all but most....blessings

I think there are several of us in Northern Colorado. I know there are several quilt shops in the area. I haven't been to all of them yet.

Sorry, but I just had to 'vent' after seeing what some of you wrote.

Its okay everything will be alright......

I am a guy and I am far from gay but have gay friends and I love to quilt also. This is a unisex hobby and we all enjoy it for various reasons and for me I find I can use my artistic side while being able to use my vintage machines for something other than a dust collection device.

And trust me I am the most manly man you have seen. Just go out in my garage and its laden with testosterone with Hot Rods and Snap-On tool boxes full of tools everywhere you see!

Just because you quilt does not make you gay but its fun to keep them guessing

Holy Cow Dude. :) Settle down there......I personally find it quite sexy that men quilt ... and usually the men's quilts are a heck of a lot better than most women's stuff I see. Men's brains operate in a different way, and you guys look at things differently, thus you express them differently. It's a sad fact that sometimes men aren't given their due when it comes to quilting, sewing, whatever........... if a woman could be president then hell a man can sew up a storm.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Old man -New quilter,
I belong to the Austin area quilt guild(AAQG) and there are about 20 men in our guild, the majority aren't gay. They make wonderful quilts, its great to see quilting done from another angle that I would never think of.
Mr.C. and his wife own a long arm quilting business, his quilts are lovely! He does most of the quilting for their customers; most of the quilting is done free hand.

Depending on how I come home will say if I hit Texas or not, I might be sliding through Colorado one more time on my way home if that is the case then I will not be going through there.

I have to say my son is always welcomed at our LQS. They take good care of him and he loves it.

My hubby always goes with me and finds the neat stuff. Has a real good eye for color.

Most of the shops around here are pretty good with male customers. One of the shops, down on the far south side of town is owned by 3 guys, and called "3 Dudes Quilt shop".
When I worked in a fabric store we had several gentlemen that shopped there regularly, both for craft stuff and fabrics. One guy did a lot of Special Barbie outfits and many of the prototypes were done with fabric from our store.
Our manager was a guy and we frequently had male employees that sewed and knew what they were doing.
Several of the local shops have male employees and are very good at working with men who are shopping for significant others and are out of their comfort zones.
Several of the shops even have special "men's nights" during the holiday season to help guys shop for their wives/girlfriends and so on. They provide wish lists for the women to fill out, the shop has them for the guys. and so on.

My husband is hoot in a fabric shop..... he usually finds fabric that he thinks would make a great sports shirt. <G> (the wilder the better.)

Have fun,

Out west is almost every state on the other side of the Mississippi to me. This trip is going to be over a month long journey for me to go on. I want to see all I can see and meet and stay with as many members and their families as I can. I honestly do not expect to stay in a hotel until I get to the Grand Canyon and then I will be there for 3 days.

But yes I will be in your neck of the woods!!

When you come through Phoenix we should all get together. I have not been to "3 dudes" store--will have to look it up. I mostly buy on-line. There are 2 stores that I go to that are very good but I have never paid any attention to how they treat men. I do have a "guest room" with a murphy bed that you are welcome to use if you don't mind 2 english pointers sleeping on top of you, lol. (you can close the door........)
So, lunch and a trip to some shops in Phoenix when the weather is a little cooler? I don't remember when you said your trip will be. I am in north central Phoenix so probably not too far from Pati.

Billy.. I know you won't be in this area, but if you go through Springfield, Missouri you should stop at "The Quilt Sampler" it's on Glenstone at Sunshine and it's a wonderful shop. When I lived there I shopped there LOTS.. they're super and have a great selection.

GrammaNan 07-12-2010 11:32 AM

Billy if you go through Rapid City South Dakota you should try to stop at The Thimble Cottage. It is over 300 miles away from me but I stop there every time I visit my son and his family. It is owned by Pearl Louis. She designs her own patterns and fabrics. The ladies there are so helpful. Sturgis might be a place that you will want to see. The bike week is coming up soon. Enjoy your trip.

My husband gets hugs when he goes to the local quilt shop with me , they have a corner with a big easy chair and guy books to read, he loves it, When we travel across Arizona or across country, we stop at quilt shops , he always finds a quilt hanging on the wall that he wants, so we go home with enough material for another king size quilt, He is loving this life, we have been married for 6 years now ,both of us lost spouses to cancer, BTW, we both are on Medicare, so that should give you a clue to our ages,

Eddie 07-12-2010 12:53 PM

Generally, the LQS that I go to are very nice to me, and I feel very comfortable in them. I have two main ones that I go two, one in either direction, and they all know me by name in both of them.

I think it's the customers who haven't seen me in there before that are the ones that are dumb-struck at times. A few weeks ago we were at one of those LQSs and there was a lady from Russia in there (here in Arkansas of all places) with apparently her elderly mother as well as her two small children. I was gathering some fabric to be cut and had put it on the cutting table when she asked "YOU quilt?" with much surprise. I'm guessing there aren't many male quilters in Russia other than our Admin, LOL :) The owner of the shop jumped in and glorified me to no end, talking about how many quilts that I had made, etc., etc. And then there was the other customer who looked at me when I walked in a different time as though I were an escaped convict. So I get different reactions.

There is another LQS that I've been to a couple of times, but will not go back. They treated me as though I were an idiot when I came in there, and they were bordering on rude. It's kind of a toney place, so they haven't gotten any of my $$$ since.

8gr8kids 07-13-2010 02:46 PM

Men probably get treated in fabric stores the same way women are treated in the tool department at sears.

Billy,

I'm doing that, just not on my MC since I'm taking my quilting machine to get an upgrade and my DSM so I can piece while I'm house sitting in Florida! I'll be going through WA, ID, MT, CO, NM, TX, MS, AL, FL, GA, SC, NC, VA, WV, OH, IN, IA, and SD. I'm a bit flexible on my route, so if there is a LQS I just can't miss, please let me know!

If your trip takes you through SW Ohio - the Fabric Shack in Waynesville is a quilters destination

quilterguy27 07-14-2010 08:07 PM

Hmmm, sounds like "Pretty Woman" but, of course he's a guy. He should go back to that first shop and let them know, " Big mistake, HUGE". LOL! I've only been to one LQS in Arkansas and they couldn't have been more helpful. I had them finish quilting a queen size quilt on a longarm for me and I bought a bunch of fabric. I think they had as much fun as I did. Loved it!

where i am there are 2 in different direction that i frequent...one of them (the biggest/oldest one) which i even worked at for awhile treated my hubby very poorly when he went in planning to buy stocking stuffers for me. He went in the owner was working that day (she is not much of a 'people' person) and pretty much made him feel like he had no business walking through the door...he left without buying anything and said he will never go back there....the other one, he loves going to! the ladies take him under their wings and shop with him, show him things, tell him about things they think i really should have...last christmas he spent about $100 at that one getting me great little things i would not usually buy myself but wonder how i got along without...
so #1 shop really hurt her business, could have had a returning customer...#2 shop, get's his $$ when ever he's over that way...they make him feel like he's not out of place even though he is out of his element

The LQS I frequent most of the time is just as helpful to the men as the women. They have a male employee, but the women are the first to help the male customers.
We also had a male biker who frequented the shop and he not only made quilts, but also designed many beautiful quilts. There are a few of his patterns still on the racks (he passed away this past year), but I'm sure they won't be there for long.

JACRN 07-21-2010 05:33 PM

My husband is very manly. Grizzle Adams type. Hunts, fishies. makes his own long bows and arrows, but he can sew ,iron and clean house better than most. All I. do is cook and do the laundry and do all the things i couldn't when i worked.

Ilovemydogs 11-14-2010 07:32 AM

My LQS is very nice to everybody! Its a shame that people look down their noses at paying customers! Where are their manners???

Lostn51 11-14-2010 08:50 AM

The way I look at it my money spends anywhere I take it.

The funny thing is I am the one making money off of them by selling them my repainted Featherweights.

Other than that, I now buy online.

Rob, you need to visit Emilys Sewing Basket on Colfax at Kipling. You will be treated like royality. The girls there love to cater to the men. All of them there are so Awesome...

I relate to this.
When I was in 10th grade I wanted to take Physics, but at that time you had to use a slide rule for computations, there were no computers that a regular citizen could get to.
It was considered unseemly for girls to take the hard sciences in our community, and no other girls were taking Physics.
I was not allowed to take it. My class was changed by Admin to the "creative writing" Journalism class, and I was expected to be a reporter for the school newspaper.
I agree it's stupid for people not to be able to learn.
And just so's ya know, I took Physics at university in the late-'80s-early-'90s, and did very well indeed thankyouverymuch.
