So I went from one lousy low-end Singer I bought new in 1990 and fought to sew on for 20 years, to 8 sewing machines in just a few months-severe, acute, blissful SMAD. Two are for my kids, 3 are FWs, two are older models with reputations for excellence and devoted fans. So my mom came over for a refresher quiltmaking lesson and to borrow a machine. I was actually going down for a nap (my favorite hobby, since all my work in that field is perfect), when my sewing machine dealer called me with an amazing offer. I had purchased two new machines there, one high-end, one entry level. I actually hadn't been that impressed with them, for various reasons. ALL FORGIVEN! I got a used, made in Switzerland, Bernina 440 QE for $1900! I get classes and a one year warranty. So until there's a screaming deal on an 820.... I'm staying up late with it and, like the Bernina 930 I bought used from a lovely quilter on this board, it deserves all the hype. If I'd paid for a new one, I'd be less inclined to share it with my kids and mom, so getting it used and at a bargain price is an extra blessing. Also got a discount on a few extras for it. Huzzah!
