I loved your story. I was going to read it to my family but wanted to show them the picture first so they would really understand what I was telling them and before I could speak, my 17 year old son said "you mean the swastika looking thing"? I could not believe he saw it. They still laughed at your story about the swastika bags.
LOL...I told part of the story to my DH and showed him the picture...Then I finished reading it and had to show him again. Neither one of us noticed it at the beginning....OMG..Still LOL.
I just had my 16 yo daughter come look at the pic and asked her what she thought of the quilt block. She says "Mom! Why is it the Nazi sign!
I have to admit I had a hard time seeing it myself. I was planning on making a quilt with this block but guess maybe I better rethink it. Especially not make one for this daughter! |
Why is it that quilters didn't recognize it, but kids and non quilters did?? Do we just have "selective seeing?"

Yes I guess we do - look at all the mistakes we see but others don't. |

Thats to funny. I made my brother a wallhanger several years ago (1 of my first) I think it was the Chevron block and my nephew noticed the pattern made a swastick symbol about a year ago so now when I go to my brothers thats all I see in that wallhanger. I'm in the process of replacing it. :-D

I didn't see it til you mentioned it. It's a beautiful block otherwise.
It's a beautiful block, I had to squint to see it. Kids have such keen eyes and ears lol
It's still a great idea for the bags. thank you for showing it. And the heart makes it look good.
I will buy "bags" on sale, embellish them & use them instead of an expensive paper one. And it already has an afterlife! That block , I hate, my sister & I argue about it all the time, She does see it, I always do. GOOD SAVE!!!
This probably won't help you, but in Indonesia, the swastika is a very, very old symbol from the Hindu religion. It means "peace and prosperity" an dis a sign of eternity. I've seen the symbol on the outside of houses and it is there to bring prosperity and good fortune to the people living in the homes. It IS very difficult to not see the "bad" part of the symbol, though....
I must be really really blind because I don't see it.
Too funny!
They look fine. I would have never noticed it. The heart is pretty too.
that is so funny.
I didn't realize the railroad lock was a swastika. I think you have touched a spot in all of us. I don't think it would have been so noticeable if it hadn't been put on black.
It is good to know the real meaning of the symbol, but it will now always be associated with Hitler and his crimes against humanity. Too bad. |
Even with the heart I can still see it.
Do cover the whole thing. Even at my advanced age, I still have a knee jerk reaction to that symbol, and I'm not even Jewish. Today it's way to easy to go out and unknowingly offend someone or other. But your son is really a sharp kid to notice something like that. |
It's because we are working so close to the block. I always back away and look with fresh eyes. You would be surprised at how often they look so different from a small distance. LOL
Funny Story. Thx for the laff

anyway, you have an excellent idea going on here and i think i'll give it a try myself!! thanks for the inspiration. That's ok just set a hot iron down and get the area hot then lift up the heat and bond will come right up. Put a applique cloth down and iron over the spot you will pick up any loose glue that was left. I do it all the time when I do something I don't like! |
Great idea and I think the heart is quite an antidote for a "swastika"! Totally cancels it and still looks great!

My youngest son (16) and I go out. Come home and he sees the four bags on the counter and asks "Mom why did you put Swastikas on those bags?" "What, no honey thats a fence rail block" (I liked the green so I made a fourth strip using the green again. Oh, dang I can see it! Why didn't I see it before?) He says, "Wow, my moms gonna carry out her groceries from Walmart in Swastika bags." OMG! What have I done? I couldn't see it before, now it's all I can see.

My friend made the same mistake on her entire quilt. When she brought it into work and after tons of ohhs and ahhhs, she discovered the same thing. Immediately went home and ripped it out and changed it and is now very happy she did.
I have an entire quilt made from the card trick block. I didn't see the swastika until after it was entirely completed! I'm embarrassed to take it out of the closet.
I'm rolling on the floor laughing. I would not have seen that as a swastika, but hey, I love the heart on it, you made a good save. You would have seen that every time you looked at it. Also that is a great idea. Hide the logo's so you can use them anywhere.
What a panic, yep ony a kid would see that. I thought it was a great idea until I saw that. The heart was a great save. Now I have to go look at the rail fence doll quilts I just made for my granddaughters and hope I don't see anything but pretty colors. That made my day.
I did the very same thing on a pieced back. I had a few squares left over and put them together in the center with other fabric around them. Very proud of myself. Put it together, quilted, put the binding on, showed hubby. He said "why is there a swastika on the back". What????? I hand stitched another bit of leftover over the center and it isn't as obvious.
Guess I'm weird, but I see it more with the heart on it than without! Well, face it....I am weird. LOL
thats a block my husband didn't like for that reason
It wouldn't be nearly as funny if the exact same hadn't happened to me. I made a quilt years ago and my son said the say thing about the design. It wasn't quite as clearly evident because it was a large quilt but he saw it none the less. I think the heart did a great job!!! Quick thinking!!!
The Swastika is also a symbol in Buddhism and hinduism.
http://www.religionfacts.com/buddhis...s/swastika.htm I think you saved it well! |
Let it to a kid to notice that! Still laughing.....
Not only 'selective seeing' -- kids (and husbands!) also have 'selective hearing'..... :o)
How funny... I didnt see it until I really looked
The spinning star pattern (got in a Amish qs) is another pattern that if you're not careful with color use, can end up looking like a double Swastika. I'm no kid but lived in Germany after the war.
how funny! My girls and I made a baby quilt about a month ago and used a 4 rail fence blocks, and when we were deciding our lay-out we noticed a Swastika too!! We rearranged it, thankfully we noticed before we sewed it all up because I would be just like you and see it all the time. I love the added heart! And I really love your bag idea and might make some for my family for Christmas!
Cool save....your son is sure observant, I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing
OMG to funny :-D
That is sooo funny. Now that it was mentioned I see it too but don't think I would have seen it if it wasn't mentioned.
So funny. I like the bags. |
