One of my senior high school students is pregnant and I had decided to make her a baby quilt. I had told her to let me know as soon as she knew the sex. She found out last week it will be a boy, so I went and bought some suitable fabric this past weekend. Yesterday I told her I had gotten the fabric and thought she would like it. She told me "i'll love it no matter what because you are making it from scratch for me." This is one of my difficult kids. So nice when you manage a rapport with them.

That is so nice of you to do that for her. In is obvious that she will treasure it. By the way, do you have a Nurse Family Partnership program in your area? It would be a great support and resource for her. It is free of charge. Google for more info.

Usually they can get on WIC and get free food and formula when baby arrives Usually through the health department. What a way of bonding with her!

That is very nice of you to do that. I'm sure she needs all the positive strokes she can get.
I'm sure that it shows my age when I tell you that it blows my mind to read 'One of my senior high school students is pregnant'.

She's a senior so it could have been worse. We have kids that graduate with two or more kids already. I'm probably in your age group but have been working in a district where many, many kids are at risk. So I have lost my surprise at this over the years. We try to scare them into not getting pregnant but once they are all you can do is support the best you can. This kid can be tough but she can also be very sweet.

She should be able to get on WIC now. They give healthy food for the mothers also.

I think the difference in the age groups is that 40 years ago if you were pregnant you were not allowed to continue high school and many girls were sent away in secret to have their babies. This has been happening forever. It is much more common now and handled in a much different way. Don't get me wrong, I know it is not the best way, but that is how it is. Good for those people who are out there helping them.
If the girls have the right support their lives can be turned around.

Glad she has someone in her life that can and will be there for her.
