I never even bother with doing any math or designing for other people. I look them square in the eye and tell them "twelve hundred minimum." Then I go back to working on what I was working on and they go to Walmart and buy some cheap piece of crap. It keeps me happy and really that's all that matters.

They buy cheap mass produced items of little quality. They do not take into consideration the cost of good quality fabrics that will last for years or the high quality workmanship of the artist. With this dude's attitude, he could no longer afford anything that I made because it would suddenly become one of those priceless items you see in musems. Just tell him that you get what you pay for and let the cheapscape go.

I worked for a while in the summer at a store in Talkeetna, Alaska. People wanted to pay the same for a hand done quilt as for one of those made in Indonesia. I told them to buy the one from Indonesia and wash it, then come and see the locally done quilts. They would find the prices more than reasonable. The old addage stands firm. "You get what you pay for" (I miss you, mom) toni

I was asked to make a queen size quilt that would need almost 8000 small pieces. I told them you buy all the materials, and I will make and hand quilt it for $1500. It should be done in about a month. Some people value our work.

The only answer to the cheapies who don't want to pay what it is worth---
"you should go shopping at walmart, I'm sure you'll find something you like there" |
This thread hit so close to home that I read it to DH. He used to be a hunter and he appreicates my quilts so he could relate to the quilt/hunter situation.

I get that now that we are longarmers. Usually price it a bit high and see how they react. One 'friend' wanted one very specific last year. It would have cost her $900.00 for me to do it.
I've not heard from her since! |
I agree with you totallu. When I first read your post I said to myself I'll take a king size quilt for 650 ANY day as a matter of fact for that price I'll take 3!
