Are Halos worth it
 

I'm looking for a way to make free motion machine quilting easier. I have a sit down quilting machine and have heard about a product called "Halo" at a quilt show. Does anyone have any experience with this product? I thought it also might help to keep my fingers away from that needle!

Have you tried Machinger's quilting gloves? If those didn't work, I personally would rather use the Batt Scooters than a halo. Too frustrating for me to keep moving the halo -- at least on the couple I've tried. Batt Scooters achieve the same effect of raising your hands up off the quilt, thereby reducing strain and unnatural wrist positions. You might try visiting a sewing machine store & ask to try out a halo. I know the ones by me allow that.

I tried a thin embroidery hoop and found it annoying to keep moving it. I like machingers but also made myself some of these as per slightly off quilter's tutorial. Maybe these would help you

I use a halo and like it. It could be a little bigger but I find it useful.

I use the Martelli gripper ring. It's wonderful. I couldn't quilt without it, as I can't spread my fingers or exert pressure with them and so can't move the quilt in the usual way. The ring is large and it really grips! My hands are completely relaxed as I quilt. I couldn't believe how easily the quilt moved the first time I tried it. (I also use the Jennoop quilt suspension system to eliminate drag.)

I have the Halo. In fact I have two. I put one on top of the other. It is great for detail machine quilting. It took practice as it seemed awkward at first. I was fortunate to have Sharon Schamber sit with me at her booth and show me how to use it. Practice, Practice, Practice. I also use Machingers. Best things ever!

I have one and don't use it, but think I just haven't practiced enough. I wouldn't buy it unless you do a lot of detailed quilting. Or want to.

Martelli hoops
 

Just watched You Tube video an they look like the Martelli hoops would work well. Then I checked Amazon and wow! they are expensive.

It is my understanding that the top or opening of the "harp" portion of the halo collapses and distorts the fabrics. When it collapses, it wrinkles and causes irregular stitching. I have not tried it and doubt I will as I find the Machinger gloves work best for me. Try putting on your kitchen gloves and see if they work or cut off the tips and put them on several of your fingers.

One thing to make FMQ easier is not have the quilt hanging off the sides of the table.
