The show was great lots of beautiful quilts and tons of venders with all kinds of neat stuff.

But, one quilt made our local news. It was from Ca showed an abstract pregnant woman in a cardboard box with her legs open and showing way too much detail.
Lots of different views were expressed.
What is your opinion of this type of quilt. Is it "art" ? Should it be in a quilt show?
Just wondering what you think.

It will be interesting to see opinions on this. I don't think it would probably be allowed where I live.

I really wasn't sure what I was seeing at first. Then I was really surprised it was in the show.

Had a look on the media pages and saw the quilt and the comments. They also had a poll which was interesting.

It makes a very strong statement about a real, current social issue. Pornographic, no, confronting and disturbing, yes. One assumes the organisers/board are representative of that particular community and therefore made the decision to show the quilt based on the assumption most people would not find it offensive.

Was it the only quilt there which made such a strong statement? Was it mixed in with all the mainstream quilts or in a section along with other art quilts? Was the perception of the public, it was thrown in to shock? Could the organisers have labelled it as 15+?

Possibly it should have been shown in a gallery under a thematic group with other artforms. Probably not what you would expect to find in a regular quilt show.

More importantly was the stitching good, did the values give a balanced look and was the binding stitched neatly.

You'll never be able to please everyone, and I don't think we should try to cater to everyone's sensabilities. I absolutely believe that it belongs in the show as a piece of textile art. The last time I went to a quilt show, a person staffing a guild booth and one of her patrons felt that I was being pornographic by breastfeeding my son in public. On the same day, dozens of people came up to me while I was feeding my son to tell me how wonderful breastfeeding is and how much they missed it. Everyone has different opinions on such things, and I would rather have the quilt out in the world to spark discussion than hidden away out of fear of offending some.

The work was well done. It took alot of expertise to do the quilt. I had to really look to understand exactly what I was seeing. The message was very clear and frightening. A pregnant woman alone living in a box!

I didn't find it pornographic (I've only seen the strategically blurred image, but I know what's there <g>), nor did I "like" it. I thought it made a very strong social statement and for that I give it the nod, but it's not something I would have admired, except for the skill that was obviously involved.
