I finally got my catalog from Hancock's of Paducah (I had forgotten I had requested one from them!) I just quickly looked through it, but I noticed they have a large selection of watercolor/blender batiks. Which is awesome because I want to use watercolor batiks in my Zelda stained glass wall hangings and each of them have at least 10 different colors so having these fabrics in one place makes my job of finding fabrics for these big projects a little easier (not easy searching for fabrics on dial-up).

Now I'm just wondering if anyone has bought anything from Hancock's of Paducah before and got some good things to say about it.

Yes,yes, yes!! Super terrific, wonderful people, great merchandise, quick shipping, and all 'round best online fabric place I have ever dealt with. That's where your black came from...and gobs of other stuff, too.

The only downside is the print catalog, like all print catalogs, can sometimes not acurately reproduce the fabric colors. I have found that if I compare the colors of what I want online, even if they are not exactly what the fabric truly is, they are all off by the same degree on my monitor. So if they look good together on screen, they will look good together in person, see what I mean? There is much more online than there is in the catalog (but it does take awhile to load their site on my dialup  ).

Happy hunting!

Goddess, suggest you go online at hancock's of paducah - they have batiks on sale currently :D

I only know this because when we got the NEW snailmail catalog, some fabrics were no longer there . . .so I checked the online sales items . . .I don't use batiks, but I did see they are on sale.

By the way, great place to order from!

I purchase fabric from them at least once a month and they are always timely and professional. My other go-to online companies are Shabby Fabrics and Fat Quarter Shop.

nellie 08-11-2008 11:43 PM

beachlady 08-12-2008 04:57 AM

I have an order with them right now and should get it soon. They usually are very quick and get my orders correct.

I always order from them at least once a month. Like everyone else said, the orders are always correct and timely. I always check out what they have on sale-they have lots of great things!!!!

Okay... i have a question for everyone. You have all mentioned they are quick and timely.... what do you consider quick? Is it compared to other online fabric stores? I'm just asking b/c i ordered some fabric and a book two weeks ago from them and I just got it yesterday. Is that normal for fabric stores?

I call it my quilter's "porn" mag! My DH has his Cabela's catalog, I have Hancocks!

I have had only one problem with them and that is the last time I ordered a charm pack from them, I had to square up and trim ALL 48 pieces because whomever cut them, did a horrible job. :x Other than that, I have had no problems with their product or service. The shipping time is usually 10-14 days for me - but worth it becasue I usually only shop their closeout and lastchance sections!! :-)

I usually receive my orders from them within a week, but depending on holidays and weekends, sometimes it will take longer. They say shipping takes 5-10 working days.

zyxquilts 08-12-2008 09:18 AM

I actually have 2 orders on the way from them now! I've been ordering from them for years & their fabric is the tops, excellent service, no problems! I'm on their email list which is VERY dangerous (did I say I have TWO orders pending...??!), they have great close out sales & web only specials. I love it when something cool makes it to the "2.98/yard" page! :D:D:D
(Just be aware that the pricing is per HALF yard and you have to order "2" for a yard.)

Sweet!

The only thing that worries me is what nor'easter said about the color matching. Most of my stained glass quilt projects are mostly made up of the same color, but in several different shades. Its already going to be a pain trying to match all those colors without having to worry if the catalog or the monitor is showing the fabric in the correct color.

Can you get fabric samples off that site?

nor'easter 08-16-2008 11:12 AM

I do not believe they send samples, Goddess. You could call 1-800-845-8723 and ask or email them at [email protected].

They do, however, accept returns for a full refund within 30 days. They try hard to match the catalog color to the fabrics, but paper and fabric will never be exactly the same.

I looked through my catalog and on the Hoffman Bali Watercolors page it says "Color Card includes swatches of all 217 colors in a 4 page fold out card. $50 value, only $24.98". I mean, sounds like they have swatches, at least for the Bali Watercolors. I'll have to ask if they offer swatches for their Moda Marbles or their Java Blenders (cause those would work, too).

Unfortunatly, I'm a little short so I can't buy the Color Card and I couldn't spend the money anyways because I'm trying to save up to help Nick out (he did end up moving to Arizona---I think to see what it was like, but ended up hating living down there and realized that'd he'd be more comfortable and happy if he moved back up to Minnesota. I offered to help in anyway I can because I'd be happier, too, if he moved back up here.) So no major spending for a while. And cutting back, too...I've had to switch over to Sam's Club soda instead of buying the Mountain Dew (which I'm addicted to) to save a few bucks. Plus, they raised their prices on the six pack of bottled soda...was $2.98 and now its $3.40-somethin'. I did "spoil" myself, though, and bought two yards of $1 fabric---it was see-through, black with big almost Hawaiian-like flowers and stripes on it. :D

I thought you meant FREE swatches, like some other retailers send. Hancock's does sell a moda marbles color card for 18.98 http://www.hancocks-paducah.com/Item--i-MMBL-CRD I have one and it is helpful, but a one inch square of a mottled fabric does nor always give you a true picture of what a four inch square will look like. Just so you know.

Another thought would be to see if Craft Connection has what you want. They DO send free samples of fabrics you want to see "in person". This is from their website: "Unlike other online stores, we do send free snippets if you send us a self-addressed stamped envelope, and tell us the codes for the fabrics you need (no snippets of Ultrasuede or fleece). That way you can see the exact colors of the fabric before you buy. We hope this will work reasonably well for our customers." They, also, are an excellent place to do business and I order from them frequently. Their shipments take much longer to get to me, but you are a lot closer to Colorado than I am. http://www.craftconn.com/Main.asp?Ta...m&Step=Fabrics

There's places that have free swatches? :? I've seen a few places that will give you swatches for $.25 each or a whole bundle for a certain amount (like Dharma Trading Company will give you samples of all their cottons and the other types of fabric or the whole fabric selection for a certain price.)

Actually, I'm not even sure what I need right now. I just got a rough idea. I want watercolor/marble batiks or prints. I'm guessing I will need anywhere from 30 to 80 different colors for all of the wallhangings. I haven't gotten around to counting all the colors yet...right now all I know is that my green one has 12 or 13 colors (not including the black "leading"). Let's see...there's a green one, a blue one, a purple one, a yellow one, one with brown/earthy tones, two red/rust/orange ones, and one multicolored one. I think I got 'em all. I'm going to try and match all those colors with all the paint samples I swiped from Wal-Mart so that way I don't have to keep on going back to the game every time I want to match a fabric with a color I need.

So Craft Connections might not be able to help until I figure out my colors. Unless they'd be okay sending an order of swtaches of every single water color fabric they have. lol. But thanks for the link. It might come in handy.
