The closest one is over 45 minutes away and I have to drive through a bad area to get to it. I wish there was one closer.

Same here, and it was a pitiful excuse of store before it shut down.

They closed all their stores in central Florida. It was no great loss.

Now that is a thoughtful husband.

We have a Hancocks here and I buy there often.
It usually is a mess with antique furniture of all sorts down the middle a isle, etc. They dont usually have more than two employes in the whole store and one has to stand and wait for help, Guess they are better than Hobby Lobby as it is on the other side of our town and they are expensive. I noticed today the middle a isle was clean and bare.

I liked Hancock's, which was near my home. When they first moved here, they annihilated the competition, two favorite fabric stores where I had shopped for years. Then Joann's came along and gave Hancock's too much competition, so when they closed a slew of stores, our neighborhood store was one of them.

In defense of the people who work the Hancock stores: I use to work for them (all od 2009) and I know for a fact that as a money saving tactic the coroporate office cut the manger's labor hours down so much that they cannot schedule enough help for the business the store has. It makes it hard for the 2 (sometimes 3) people who are there to keep things neat and orderly. That is one of the reasons I no longer work there.

martha jo 05-15-2010 05:54 PM

The Hancocks near me was closed. Still have store in Austin and I buy Alexander Henry and batik. They seem to pay the rent with decorator items and fabric is just incidental. I don't like Joanne's at all. We have a wonderful quilt store in New Braunfels, Quilt Haus. Thank goodness.

There is a Hancock's 50 mi from where I live. It's in Lynnwood, WA but they put a civic center right next to it and the parking is horrible! The events at the center keep the parking spaces pretty full a lot of the time. The clerk told me they are looking for a new location but I haven't heard if they've found it yet. I've also gone to the 2 in Spokane, WA when I'm over there. There's one in the Valley and one on N. Division. The NDiv one was closed last year when I was there due to remodel. I'll have to check it out this summer when I'm over that way. There are a number of JoAnn's stores close to me (Marysville, Everett, Lynnwood & Bellingham). The Marysville one is the worst of them but I just found out they will be moving to the north (called Smokey Pt. area) and will open in the winter. That's only about 20 min. from me! I buy fabric where I can afford it but I check to make sure it's okay.

Same here! The clerks are so friendly and helpful at my store I love it! They will ask me if I am on break from my job down the street or off from work. I go so much!

carco2 05-15-2010 08:02 PM

Many of the Hancock's stores closed and there are not too many left.

I have purchased fabric from them in Las Vegas (visiting) and St. Louis (on vacation) and their fabric is in no way inferior. In fact, they carry many of the manufacturers that you do not see in Joann's like Michael Miller, Timeless Treasurers and Shamash.

If you have a store in your area, check them out. I think that you will be pleased

stoppain 05-16-2010 03:44 AM

Hi Carol, I only at Hancocks on-line. I found thier fabric
very good. But what was in the store very poor quality.

Your Hancocks sounds like the one in Savannah. But I really don't mind the wait. The help is very friendly and helpful.

awesome, glad your hubby gave you some $$$

I had a treat last weekend as DH took me to the Fabric Hut (1/2 hour away). They carry over 6,000 bolts of quilting fabric!
Yes, the common is in the right place! I needed a tissue for the drool (which they had on the front counter!)

Then DH said "I'll be back in a couple of hours" and handed me $100.00 for early Mother's day from him and the kids.

Heaven!

They do offer a complete quilters catalog of fabrics. You can sign up for it. I usually see it at the quilt shows. You will get a subscription if you sign up with AQS.

butterflywing 05-16-2010 01:29 PM

is there a hancock's in vancouver, bc? i'll be there in about three weeks.

theresse 05-16-2010 02:32 PM

I loved our Hancock store, then they close the store inside a week. It was gone. I miss it.

reginalovesfabric 05-16-2010 02:49 PM

Our hancocks just moved into a really nice place, they are going to stock more quilting fabric and yarn. I like all the women that work there, I've taken classes when they offered block of the month and learned a lot. I shop Joann's when I go to South Carolina which I'm going Thursday. We have one 100 miles away it just opened last November.

Boston1954 05-16-2010 03:06 PM

My sister and I go to their store from time to time. I have pretty much seen all their fabric so I mostly take a look at the thread.

 maybe it is not a tornado...maybe it is the fabric witch....uuuups....

The Hancock's in Hendersonville, TN closed down 2 years ago. Some of their fabric was alright but there was alot of cheap looking fabric. I shop at Joann's occasionally, if I have too, but rather shop at a couple of Quilting shops in Lebanon, Tn. Joann's personnel acts like they wish you would go away, so that's why I prefer private quilting shops.

We have one in LaCrosse, WI and I really like it. They have a great selection of fabrics but many are quite expensive. However the have 40% off sales and sometimes $2 off a yd so that's always a good time to buy. Also I have a Hancock discount card so get a little off some items. A couple of their staff are quilters and they are always willing to help you select fabric for a pattern when they have time.

zz-pd 05-16-2010 08:37 PM

I don't have one by me, but I don't have money so would not matter. God bless. Penny

Grandmama Pat 05-17-2010 05:19 AM

Our JoAnn's closed several years ago, but we still have a Hancock's, which is about 30 miles from me. I have two quilt shops I love to shop at, one in Panama City, FL and one in Crestview, FL. I don't like Hancock's because they have furniture, etc. on one half of the store and fabric on the other. I like a lot of fabric to choose from and if I want to shop for furniture, etc. I'll go to a furniture store, but the cost of quilt shop fabric seems to be forever going up, but it is great fabric.

crafter1953 05-17-2010 09:20 PM

The one near me closed its doors last year. JoAnn's is a thirty-five min. drive, and Wal-Mart is 5 min away.So I go to Wal-Mart. They keep talking about getting rid of the fabric and craft area but it does a lot of business.

patsyo56721 05-18-2010 02:54 AM

We have 2 Walmarts in our area that still have fabric. One is not having their fabric 50% OFF and I understand in October they will no longer have fabric. That will leave only 1 with fabric.

Olivia 05-18-2010 03:03 AM

Do not confuse Hancock's with Hancock's of Paducah. They are not the same store. I will not buy from our nearest Hancock's but order often from Hancock's of Paducah.

marsye 05-18-2010 04:02 AM

Honest??? I hate Hancocks! Never go there!
I buy all my fabric from Marshall Dry Goods

Carol B

I've never been to the actual store. But my quilting teacher and a former quilt store owner once told me that Hancock's carries a lot of low quality fabrics. Hancock's of Paducah however is a whole different ball game. There is no connection between the two stores she told me. But she may be wrong, I don't know.

patricej 05-22-2010 11:36 AM

well of course a shop owner would say that. not all shop owners, to be sure. most are ethical and wouldn't trash the competition like that. :hunf:

hancock's fabrics run nearly the whole Snooty Scale ... from 1 to 8. (scale is 1 to 10)

and here's a news flash. not all LQS carry 9s and 10s.

so there.

I said she USED to be a shop owner. That was many years ago. I don't think she'd have an axe to grind any longer. And she's really a very ethical and lovely older lady who has been around a quilt shop or two. I've never heard her say a bad word about anyone. This was just a remark in passing that she made. In the days when I was learning from her, I couldn't afford an LQS and bought from other sources. She never said anything about my choices of fabrics.
And here's another news flash, most quilt shops I've been in DO have good quality fabric. Although one shop I visited on a hop DID carry a few panels from a lower quality line. So, one out of a few dozen ain't bad. It goes back to what everyone here has been saying all along, buy the best you can afford and to heck with what everyone else does!

Granny B 06-19-2010 02:23 PM

We have a Hancocks here in town, but the attitude of the sales women was so bad that I only went there if I just had to. One day it was so bad that I called the corporate office. They have a new regional manager now and the store is a delight to shop in. Their fabrics are along the same lines as JoAnn's. No matter where you go, you get what you pay for. I've had good and bad at LQS and the same at the chain stores.

quiltingIsfun 06-19-2010 02:45 PM

We have 2 stores, 1 was just remodeled. I too prefer them to JoAnn b/c of the good service I get and have found some good quality fabrics. They have better sales than JoAnn as well.

lab fairy 06-19-2010 07:30 PM

If I were to pick between the personnel at Hancocks or Joanne's in my area, Hancocks would win hands down. I go to my LQS (when I have to, they have really bad taste, too many Civil War fabrics for me), my not so close LQS whom I love, Hancocks, Joanne's... I'm an equal opportunity shopper. I think you're going to find good and bad in any store (although fat quarters are definitely better at my not so close LQS).

patsyo56721 06-20-2010 02:22 AM

Walmarts in my area are discontinuing fabric. The one near me in Pooler still has it

cassiemae 06-28-2010 12:54 PM

We have a Hancocks and it is great nice and neat and nice fabric. I don't get the fabric that is real cheap and looks like it. But most of their fabric is good.
cassiemae :-)

TexasGurl 06-28-2010 02:19 PM

There are only a few Hancock's left here in Houston, our local store closed several years ago. NO surprise -
Our store was just 5 yrs old in a fast growing suburb, but you'd swear it was 40 yrs old ! Same old outdated design, decor & fixtures. Unfriendly staff, always a mess. Very little to offer for quilters. Then half the store was taken over with overpriced furniture & lamps!!
Don't understand why these chains CAN'T GET IT RIGHT??? It can't be THAT HARD to offer a modern, pleasant, bright FABRIC store - with CURRENT market fabrics, notions, patterns & books - & staff that knows HOW to sew/quilt and actually trained in customer SERVICE???

That is Hancock's of Paducah, Kentucky - they are NOT related in any way to Hancock's fabric store chain

sewnsewer2 06-28-2010 02:50 PM

We have a fantastic Hancock by me! I shop there all the time.
