Funny this subject came up today! I just bought something for this type project this morning at Joann's. It is on sale for 4 days at 50% off. It is called Pellon SF101 Shape Flex, all purpose woven fusible interfacing. "For garments, and adds body and permanent stability when used as a backing for needlework and punch embroidery". It looks like a lightweight fabric with fusible "glue" on the back.

My LQS also sells a package of what looks close to the same thing and they called it Stacy. They use it for backs of their "fabric with wool embellishment" embroidery squares.

I too use Pellon SF101 as the stabilizer for my hand embroidered blocks. I tried using another piece of cotton fabric but didn't like the bulk. The Pellon product irons on well and needles beautifully.

Just read the directions on those fusibles as my friend used too hot of an iron and ended up with bubbles that would never press out.

Thimblebug6000, I love your Winter Wonderland. Question for you, did you quilt over the embroidery?

Mine was unbranded off the bolt....I just went by feel - about the thickness of two tissues with one side fusible.

Hi Anoka , I hand quilted it, the grid runs right through the embroidery stitching BUT my actual cream quilting thread stitches do not cross over the red floss. Some of my quilting is smaller/larger stitching to accommodate that. HTH

I went to a workshop with Meg Hawkey of Crabapple Hill and she recommended using either muslin or a good quality white flannel as a stablilizer.

I have made a few quilts with hand embroidery squares and I like using the white flannel, the stitches look so nice and I can even stitch without using a hoop!
