When hand piecing quilt squares, do you sew clear to the edge like when you machine piece? I know that when doing Y seams you only sew to the 1/4" mark but wasn't sure about regular seams. I'm doing 4 1/2" Dear Jane blocks and my sewing machine loves to eat pieces that small so I'm doing them by hand. I really didn't think I'd like it but piecing by hand is addicting too! Are they any hand piecers here?

Hi Susan,
When I hand piece, I sew up to the 1/4 inch seam, but not all the way across. You'll find there are lots of us hand piecers! |
I sew to the 1/4" and back stitch at beg., every 1" or so & at end.

I never sew into the seam allowance when hand piecing a block.
I hand piece (almost) everything, only paper piecing is done on the machine and putting on my binding, although I finish that by hand as well. I have an irrational fear of sewing machines :) |
As my Grandmother taught me, we sew all the way except when sewing hexagons.
