Hand piecing
 

I want to have a hand piecing project to work on during long conference calls and during the evening. I've never done any hand piecing before so I'm looking for suggestions for something fairly easy that I can't mess up too badly.

And maybe some tips on hand piecing? I would appreciate any help getting started!

I like GFG and tumbling blocks. Also, a postage stamp quilt would go very fast. Those can do fairly quilt and without too much concentration.

Have you ever considered English paper piecing? I prefer to do my machine sewing when my husband isn't home so we can enjoy our evenings home together. It's great for sitting in front of the TV and especially portable for traveling.

Hexies work great!! ... plus you have a good project to take on the road!

I agree with the GFG or tumbling blocks. I've done the tumbling blocks with the EPP method. Went very quickly and easily. Essentially you can do any block by hand but takes lots of prep work (drawing on seam lines, etc) without doing an EPP method. Just my opinion.

I just took a class with Jinny Beyer on hand piecing diamonds. It was called Diamonds Galore. She's such a wonderful teacher and quilter. She does all of her patterns by hand. I've always wanted to learn to hand piece to have my hands busy while being with my mother, who's now 98, and likes my presence with her, but not as much talking as we used to.
If you ever get a chance to study with Jinny or her videos and shows, try it. There's definitely a learning curve, but I'm enjoying the process. Her class schedule is on her website:

Make sure you draw your sewing line. It will help alot . Then you just sew from one corner to the other. Vi

Oh, so many choices! I love the English paper piecing too, and currently have a project of diamonds that I am working, but I also agree with traditional hand piecing too. I also totally agree that if you are going to do shapes and hand sew them together to draw the lines on the back just to keep your seam line more accurate. I love handwork and just find it so relaxing. So many choices. Oh! and don't forget applique! and redwork! See, too many choices maybe - lol
