The Star Spin Pattern detail instructions are worth $40. Most designer quilt patterns cost $20 or more now. I have tried to contact the authors but so far every inquiry has come to a dead end.

What do you put on your finger under the quilt when hand quilting? I keep stabbing my finger frequently.

Have any of you hand quilters seen or own the book "Hand Quilt Without a Frame" by Barbara Schaffeld? If so, what is your opinion--worth the price or not?

The author tells you to start quilting from the outside. I quilted at the table and was amazed at the results. I bought the book at Clotilde a few years ago. I believe it was less than $20 when I bought it. |
When I hand quilt, I either use a quilt-as-you-go frame (similar to a needlepoint frame) when the top is put together in strips, or if the top is one unit, I use a 14" quilt hoop. Both work great.

I have the book and made the quilt. Fabulous and I'm not an expert. Where can I fine the book? I have lots of friends who want to make it. Do not buy the pamphlet pattern. Someone condense the book and left a lot of instructions out. 2 of my expert friends made it with the pamphlet and it was a night mare.

The book is worth the money and piece of mine.

I watched Sharon Schamber's board basting video on YouTube and it's the only way I baste now. So much easier than the floor and I finally get no puckers! I thread baste well and quilt in my lap, no hoop or frame. I used to use a hoop, but my stitches are better without one. I big (more like medium) stitch everything.

Did the book give good instructions on hand quilting without a frame? I've seen the book for sale on the internet and it has a Dewey decimal number so I'm going to check our library to see if it's on their shelf.
https://www.nccardinal.org/eg/opac/home It will tell you if the book is available anywhere, and if you really want it, the library that has it can send it. |
Not familiar with that book but I hand quilt without a frame or hoop. I use Sharon Schamber's basting method (it's on youtube) and it works brilliantly. Very secure and smooth.

I've handquilted for many years and i have to use a hoop. I also either thread or pin baste and start in the center. I think whatever works for you is the way to go :)

You could try an Aunt Becky. They are pretty inexpensive and they work.

I do not do much hand quilting now but when I do I do not like using a frame. It's too restrictive for me so I just prefer to have the quilt on my lap as I hand quilt - works out just fine.
