I use a 10. Can't hand quilt as long as I used to, but still enjoy it. Mostly machine quilt now.

I'm hand quilt with arthritis as well and have a hint I have find it is helpful for me. You know the rubber finguer tip that is use by people that work with papers a lot ( a lot of bank teller use them). You can get them in differnt sizes at a office supply store. I use one on my thum, it sure help to pull the needle up. it take so getting use to. but it works for me. I hope this is help for you and If you are not inst. sorry i wasted you time. |
Those things called finger cots, that are in the first aide section of the store, are good needle pullers too.

I use 12 Sharps

I like 10s or 11s if the quilt is easy to quilt, but if the needles bend too easily I go to a larger, stiffer needle. My stitches are bigger as the needles get bigger, but I don't go through a ton of needles. For me, I use the smallest I can use and still keep a relatively straight needle.

I too use # 10, #11, or #12 needles, whichever is on sale. I prefer to use a 14 inch hoop stretched tight and use a tiny jewelers pliers to pull the needle through the quilt. This way I can load the needle to the very tip and still not have sore fingers from the effort of pulling the needle through the quilt.
