I use a hoop. It all depends on the size of the project, but I usually use anywhere from the 14" - 18" sizes.

I use a lap hoop, I have two different sizes. If you need a hoop try looking at your local Goodwill or the like. I see them all the time for about a buck.

All my quilts have been hand quilted mostly King size, I don't use a hoop or a frame just drape it over my legs on a foot stool. I baste and pin really well so it stays flat.

I love to handquilt (wish my current project had been handquilted but not enough time Grrr). Don't use a frame or hoop just drape it around about me. Like the others have mentioned just baste and pin well.

I don't usually use a frame or a hoop and have no problems with puckering as long as it is either pin or thread basted very well.

I use both. I start a quilt on a floor frame and get the center of the quilt with it. Then I start using a hoop to finish it. Or if it has a lot of straight lines, I'll use the floor frame. If it has a lot of "quilting in different directions", it's much easier to use the hoop.

I also like to use both. They both give a new look.

I don't have room for a frame so i have several hoops. Though once the cold sets in I will have a harder time arthritis boo hiss.

Try it both ways. Also sit in a comfy chair, my favorite the recliner.
