I do not use a frame when I hand quilt.

I have done it both ways, I have a large frame, but also
the PVC one that sits on the floor, plus a couple other littler
sizes. But I have done without, I feel it doesn't get as flat
as when I use a frame. But there is only preference. I am
one that can't wait to get my quilt to that point, then I can relax and just quilt. It is such a stress releaver.

I never use a hoop, but they're right - they're not as smooth as if I did. But since I wash for the crinkle look, it's not noticible as such.

I use a lap frame. It's easier to handle.

Have quilted with a hoop frame
and a floor frame.

I prefer the Floor Frame it
gives my Gus (tuxedo cat)
room to nap beside me,
of course, on the quilt.

She watched the tread being
pulled threw until she falls
asleep. J J

When my MIL passed away, her family got rid of all her "junk" and included the "nasty" looking "circle" she used to "sew her quilts." Needless to say......I salvaged her "beautiful quilting hoop" with all the personal little dents and scratches, that I consider the beauty of it all! I've used that quilting hoop many times and think of her with every stitch I make.

I have 4 hoops, a sm. pvc frame, a lg. pvc frame, a hoop on a stand that swivels, tilts and is height adjustable. I quilt on my lap using nothing at all. I've tried, I've really tried to use the hoops and frames but I just can't get comfortable with it.

I use large and small oval hoops. You will soon have some callouses built up so fingers don't hurt.

when I hand quilt, I use a hoop. Don't have a floor frame. It's really portable. But there have been times that I don't use anything at all, only the basted quilt.

Have used a lap frame but no longer. I handquilt without with pretty decent success. Just easier on my back. In the Keepsake Quilting magazine there is a small rocking footrest that is wonderful. Takes the weight off your lower spine. My husband "borrowed" the idea and made me one. Although I shouldn't, could comfortably quilt for hours with that comfy footrest.
