Hand Quilting
What do you use for batting when hand quilting. I have small wall hanging I want to hand quilt around the appliqué. I know Quilters Dream makes request weight but I think I would have to order it as I don't think any shops carry it.
Hobbs 80/20. I find this thin wadding gives even background and easy to stitch.
For a wall-hanging, I think any cotton batting would be fine. In my brain, a 100% polyester would be too light weight.
Any cotton batting without scrim (warm & natural has scrim- some people do use it but it is not the easiest choice-and it is very heavy)
Hobbs cotton, dream cotton, Fairfield. And Mountain Mist are all common brands for hand quilting, and you want to choose a Low Loft variety |
I'm one of those that hand quilt W&N. I don't have issues with it but then again, it's all I've ever used so I probably just don't know any better! When I finish the roll that I have, I'll probably experiment with Quilter's Dream 100% cotton. I'd love to use silk in a quilt at some point but it would have to be an heirloom quilt (due to cost of the silk batting!) and I don't see myself doing any heirloom work any time soon.

Quilters Dream Cotton, Hobbs 80/20, or Warm and Natural. When I first started hand quilting I used polyester - I didn't know any better
ck I will have to google scrim. I've never heard of that...........
I use Warm and Natural exclusively. Whether I am hand quilting a lap quilt, or machine quilting a wall hanging, it's the only thing I put in my work. I LOVE it.
I would only use Dream cotton batting. Call them and ask them what hand quilter's prefer. It has been over a decade since I order batting from them so I don't know what new batting they now make.
What's wrong with polyester? I was taught at a LQS that it is the best if you want to keep your work looking like it did when new. I love it and use it most of the time, except for small items and then I use something similar like warm & natural or pellon iron on. I like Hobbs polyester and Connecting Threads has it and puts it on sale a lot. They have most anything in the batting line and they're very reasonably priced.
