Hand-Quilting Thread (which to buy?)
I am hand-quilting a lap quilt for the first time, and I have an Aurifil 40wt thread that seems a bit too thin. It is only 2ply and I guess I need 40wt/3ply. (I've been online today reading about quilting threads.)
So I'm running out to JoAnn's to buy some thread. I thought I'd pick up some Gutermann hand-quilting thread. Just wanted to ask before I left if you all had any suggestions on hand-quilting thread to buy. Thx! |
Gutermann hand-quilting thread should be fine. my first choice is YLI, but the right color and availability are more important.
|
I use the same Gutermann's that I piece with - usually ecru color.
|
I like a bit of definition in my hand quilting, so I tend to use a slightly heavier cotton thread.
|
I actually prefer a heavier thread for hand quilting. If I am going to go through all the effort and time to hand quilt I want it to show. I really enjoyed using Valdani 35wt cotton hand quilting thread but you definitely won't find that at JoAnn's. It has been so long since I have been to a JoAnn's I don't even know what they carry. Do you have a quilt shop in your area? You may be peasantly surprised to find what they offer there for hand quilting thread and needles.

I buy Guterman's hand quilting thread.

Hi Neighbor! I have used YLI or Coats and Clark, although some don't like C&C I know many people that are happy w/it. I would like to try some others just to see how they compare. One problem I had w/the YLI is that because it is thicker I often had trouble getting it through the eye of my needle ( I use Roxanne size 9 or 10).
Be curious what you decide to use. |
I prefer Gutermann for hand quilting.
|
My favorite hand quilting thread is YLI and Superior threads King Tut. Gutermann isn't a bad choice for hand quilting.
|
THANKS EVERYONE!
I don't have a LQS nearby, so JoAnn's (or online) is my only option. I did go to JoAnn's and pick up the Gutermann's hand-quilting thread. It was buy one and get one free, so I got two. |
Another YLI GLAZED COTTON hand quilting thread. I used the Gutterman glazed cotton thread once because YLI didn't have the color i wanted. It was OK.
I didn't like the King Tut thread because it's not a glazed cotton. And it was expensive!!!! I'll never use it again because it knotted so easily. YLI is $5 for a 400 yd or so spool. |
I love YLI, but you can definitely use Aurifil 40wt, just coat it with bee's wax or Thread Heaven (I prefer bee's wax).
|
Just realized I should clarify that I am in KY too so that is why I said "hi neighbor".
|
My favorite is YLI, but Gutermann's is a close second.
|
I'll use just about any thread that is labeled as 'hand quilting' for that purpose as long as it's in the color I want. Sometimes I want the thread to blend...sometimes not, so whatever color I'm looking for is what brand thread I end up with. I have used all of the readily available in-store brands...Gutterman, Coats & Clark, even JoAnns brand - Americana. Also a very big believer in Thread Heaven. Makes any of these threads tangle much less.
Also use Roxanne needles - usually size 10 or 11. Don't have issues with getting any of them through the eye of the #10 but sometimes with the 11's. |
No matter what thread I buy, I always buy minimum of 2. IF it's bogo, I still buy one more especially if it's a neutral color.[QUOTE=Sheep Farmer;7733481]THANKS EVERYONE!

I'm loving the Gutermann's hand-quilting thread. It is just what I was looking for. The piecing thread was just too thin and I never knew about coating it with wax as Bree mentioned above.
Ah, well. This is all new to me and I'm learning as I go! |
Use a quilting thread especially made for hand quilting. Is a little heavier and wil last a long time.
|
If you like beeswax, you might also really like Thread Heaven if you have a chance to pick up some. I find it's easier to work with than beeswax. Glad you're liking the Gutterman.
