I am wondering if it is possible to use hand quilting thread that is cotton covered polyester in my sewing machine. This is not as thick as the machine quilting thread but I would use it for assembling the quilt and maybe to free motion it too.

Does anyone know if this is a good idea? The thread says Coats and Clark hand quilting thread/dual purpose. I am guessing that the dual purpose also means it could be used in the machine.

I would appreciate your advice. Trying to use every available avenue when possible.

Hand quilting thread should not be used in a machine; it can gum up the tension badly and require a service call. The thread is coated to make it stronger and more tangle-proof for hand quilting. I think the "dual-purpose" refers to the cotton in combination with polyester.

Just about any thread can be used in a sewing machine *except* hand quilting thread!

I should add that you certainly can use cotton-covered polyester thread in a machine as long as it is not labeled hand quilting thread.

I think the standard Coats & Clark's "dual duty" is machine sewing thread that can also be used for hand sewing; it would not be labeled hand quilting thread, though.

hhhmmm I have never seen it classified both ways as Dual duty and Hand quilting .

The hand quilting is usually coated to make it go thru the fabric easier .

I used the Coats and Clark dual duty in my Janome 6600 and it was not a good idea. Had the tension dialed all the way up and still wasn't right. Finally took it out of the machine and went to Guterman. Darla (my machine) was much happier. I wouldn't use hand quilting thread in a machine.

I am with Prism99 on this one. Handquilting thread is not too good for machines...unless it is an older or industrial grade machine, but even then the results could be less than wonderful.

I agree with Prism also. Very good advice.

Thanks so much for your advice. Today I called the Janome dealer I got my machine from and she said if the thread IS coated, I CAN NOT use it. But and I say "BUT" I CAN use hand thread that is NOT COATED in my machine.

SAY THAT 10X FASTER.
