I have used every kind of quilting frame made and still prefer a large round one for lap quilting. I keep the left hand under the quilt and help the needle by catching it on my left index fingernail, chews it up pretty bad so I bought a set of fake fingernails, glue or tape one to that fingernail and it works great. I have wrapped the finger with adhesive tape too but get a better feel from the fake ones. Reminds me, I have a couple quilts ready for hand quilting and winter is the best time to do them.

I use the same oval and round hoops as the quilter above. But when I saw your avatar I had to smile----I bought one of the "platform" hoops from Erica Wilson to do needlepoint many years ago when I went for classes with her. Good memories.

I quilt on my lap with a rectangle shaped PVC pipe frame. This is the only way I hand quilt. You layer and pin well and start in the middle and continue back and forth and up and down. Works very well.

Hand quilting is my therapy.

I hand quilt all the time in my lap. I first put my quilt in my big frame, and baste it about every 2 1/2 inches across the quilt. I do quilt in a hoop, I quilt everything, from pillows to king size quilts in my lap, I have never had a pucker on the back. My large frame, is the old time frame that sits on sawhorse type legs, I pin the quilt to the frame, and baste and roll, I usually quilt the border, while it is in the frame, then baste the rest of the quilt. When I take my quilt out of the large frame, God forbid, I square up my quilt and put the binding on it and finish the binding. (That way, I don't have the batting to mess with while I am quilting the rest of the quilt). When I start quilting the quilt in my lap, I do then start in the middle. It works for me, I guess it is where I baste the quilt, every 2 1/2 inches to 3 inches at the most, it is not going anywhere. Hope this helps. I have a quilt going most of the time.

I also hand-quilt on my lap. I use a 11" x 11" snap on frame and it works fine. I start in the center and do a square at a time.

I bought a floor-hooped stand and love it. I do have to sit in a dining room chair to keep myself upright and back straight. My first sampler quilt 10 years ago was quilted this way. I also have a large no-baste frame for hand quilting and a grace machine quilter but sometimes I like to enjoy TV and the family in the evening and can quilt more portably.

This is a great help to me as I am doing my first quilt and glad to see that the way I am able to quilt is an accepted method by many.

Another fingernail quilter. Yee haw! Thought I was the only one out there. I use a small hoop which you would have no trouble with because you can quilt in all directions because you have used a floor frame. I have a floor frame, but I don't use it anymore. I drag my queen sized quilts to 2 different quilting groups in a laundry basket. It is amazing how much you get done on drag around days. Hand quilting is same as on floor hoop. You strat in the middle. Good luck.

yep......i use a very strong plastic loop and start in the middle after i`ve made sure it is well basted
