Hand Quilter myself for 30 yrs. This is what I have found. If you do not use a hoop and just tuck the quilt edges under bottom and use your hands to hold it with tension it will be not as uniform, but turns out fine! I like to use a large oval hoop. Its 30''x24''. I love it and I can transport my project to any room to work on it!

When I lap quilt I tuck some of the sandwich under my right thigh to help keep the tension I need on the quilt. Works for me. I tried using a hoop but my hands got too tired too quickly.

If I am handquilting it is always in a hoop. If I don't I have been known to quilt in tucks.

Dakotamaid, I like your method, which I also use. You didn't say what kind of pins your use. I use safety pins. More fun to watch a movie, feet up on an ottoman and quilt til movie is finished.

Question, when you're basting the larger projects to hand-quilt, what is the easiest way to do it? I just find crawling around on the floor trying to safety pin while trying to keep my 'furry friends' off of it to be one of the least-fun things about quilting.
