do you ladies that hand sew still use bees wax or have they come up with something better to strengthen thread?

I very rarely use it anymore, but if I have a thread that continually knots I'll use it.

I have some, but I rarely think of it. It does come in handy when the thread wants to knot up.

I use if I need to.

I use the cotton thread that is already coated. I like coats and clarks best. I usually use a cream or ecru. If I decide I am going to quilt with a color I use Gutermann, they have some beautiful colors, but sometimes it seems to fray a bit after your about 1/2 through the cut length.

I use handquilting thread for sewing - it already has a glazed finish and works fine.

shaverg 04-23-2010 06:04 AM

I forgot to mention it is coated and labeled for hand quilting.

I use it all the time. It helps to keep the thread from twisting, and knotting. Also seems to strengthen it. I use Coats and Clarks 100% cotton.

I use it when hand quilting. I never have a problem with my thread knotting and I usually cut a fairly long length (36" or so)DH keeps bees so I always have ample supply.

Oh Sure ask when all my stuff is packed away  LOL

There is another wax out there that I have in a small blue plastic box, but can't think of the name off the top of my head, sorry.

Ok just went to Google  It is Thread Heaven a conditioner for thread .

Yes, it makes hand sewing go smoother, you don't have to fight the tangles. And it goes through the material so much easier. Just don't coat too heavy, it can stain some material.

i've never heard of thread heaven, how does it compare to beeswax? is it natural? or what is it made of?

just_the_scraps_m'am 04-23-2010 09:19 AM

thanks everybody, i appreciate you all taking the time to answer, i learned a few new things.....

sewcrafty 04-23-2010 09:54 AM

I still use it when I hand-quilt! I think I just got myself into the habit of doing it.

cabinqltr 04-23-2010 10:06 AM

I use bees wax every time I sew anything.I always pull the thread over the wax and especially the end as it goes thru the eye of the needle so much easier. Remember to wet the eye of the needle whether on your sewing machine or hand sewing needle , it seems to just pull the thread thru so much easier. Love that bees wax. :-D
