I have a large number of handkerchiefs that belonged to my grandmother, my mother, and myself and I would like to make a handkerchief quilt. I'm looking for a pattern where you use the whole handkerchief without cutting into them. I have searched several websites but have been unable to find a pattern.

I've used them to make a baby quilt for a friend who had a little girl. I used 9 ladies hankies. I zigzagged them onto white cotton and light batting, then hand quilted around the designs on the hankies. One had a ballerina and most had floral designs. I used pink sashing and borders. I tied it with narrow ribbon. She loved it.

I believe if you Google handkerchief quilts, you will find some patterns.

If you find a pattern, let me know. My mom is aging and she has a dresser drawer full of hankies. I am going to have to make something out of them.

am going to be watching this thread too. I want to do something with my mothers hankies.

Wish I had some of those wonderful old hankies. They were a statement in my family...all gone.
Blessings, Ruth |
If you search on the Board you will find several variations of butterfly quilts made by folding (but not cutting) handkerchiefs - very pretty. Somewhere out there is also a wallhanging of Spanish flamenco (looks wrong but spellcheck says it's right??) dancers and their skirts are hankies.

I once saw a quilt made out of hankerchieves, they were folded in a way to look like butterflies. I was bound and determined that I would make one using my mom's hankerchieves. I figured out how to fold the hankerchieves so they did look like a butterfly. I then hand sewed them onto a block and then put sashing around the block, I gave it to my oldest great niece. I also made one for her mom. (that was by request)

Here is a picture of a whole handkerchief quilt that I took at a quilt show. I liked it.

One of my aunts would send me a new handkerchief in a card every year for my birthday and I've kept them all. My grandmother would never have used Kleenex so she had scads of handkerchiefs as did my mother. I am so thankful that I have them and I want to have them displayed where they can be enjoyed. What better way than a quilt.

Now that sounds cool. I'll have to look that up.
|
What pretty quilts!

I have some of my MIL's. That would make a lovely thing to have of hers now that she's gone. Thanks for the inspiration.

Thank you for this info. I haven't started mine yet because I'm still doing quilts for grandchildren. But I am looking for a pattern where I don't have to cut up the handkerchiefs so I will look at this site with interest.
