I use shorter lengths of thread and untwist ever dozen stitches or so. Preventing knots rather than dealing with them, cutting or breaking thread is such a nuisance. - I keep several threaded quilting needles ready too, less frustrating when using shorter lengths.

The brand of thread is of importance. Coats and Clark seems to bunch up, and shred. Use a good brand quilting thread and then wax it.

I have heard that if you run a dryer sheet along the length of thread that it won't tangle as bad.
