hanging a quilt
hi all you lovely quilters with such great knowledge. I am making a quilt for a friend it is a book shelf quilt and she wants to hang it I have never made a quilt to be hung so I have two questions how do you make a sleeve and attach ? and i usually wash my quilts to get the lovely quilted look but since it will be hang on the wall I do not know if I should. opinions please

This is the method that I use: http://quilts.com/sleeeves.pdf
What I like about this method is that you get 1/2" slack, which is used by the rod, and secondly, you don't have to turn the tube inside right. I don't believe that I personally would wash it, but it is a matter of personal preference. |

I stitch it on to the back of the quilt when I attach the binding. There is strength there and the raw edges are buried under the binding (I do binding by hand) Then I hand stitch the bottom to the back of the quilt. Sometimes if I am lucky, the position of an accent border will allow me to SITD and secure the bottom of the sleeve to the quilt.

I learned by watching Bonnie Browning's (Exec Director of AQS) YouTube video:

here is a picture I'm trying to decide on a border which one do you like the bright blue or molted white blue |
I like the dark blue. The quilt is awesome.

Of the two fabrics, my preference is the dark blue. I hang my wallhangings by making a pocket and attaching by hand to the top back and bottom back.... then I purchase lathing cut to length and drill holes for the nails...I find that with a wallhanging this size it is nice to have a pocket at the bottom too just to keep it from rippling or hanging away from the wall.

I love the dark blue. When I am making "hanging quilts" I make a sleeve the same way Maniac Quilter does. I like to use café curtain rods which only stick out about 1 1/2 inches from the wall, it gives just enough for depth.

I like the dark blue. Your quilt is very nice. I think the mottled blue competes with the "books" and the dark blue makes them stand out.
