hanging sleeve
 

Can someone direct me, how is the best way to sew a hanging sleeve so the quilt hangs flat in front? I know I need to leave some ease to allow for the dowel, but I'm not sure how much. This quilt will be hanging in Houston, so I want it to look its best.

I put an extra 1/2" give into my sleeves, and place them ~3/4" down from the edge of the quilt (including the binding), which is a bit different from the above instructions.
They've always hung straight, although never in Houston. ;-)

Congratulations on that!!!

You can baste your sleeve on and stick a dowel in it to see how it hangs - you want to make sure the sleeve doesn't show over the top of the quilt, and that the top edge of the quilt doesn't bend or pucker forward.
Obviously, much easier on a small wall hanging than a big bed-sized quilt.

Thank you for your replies. The quilt isn't mine; I was hired to attach the binding and the sleeve. The client requested that the sleeve be attached under the binding. I guess I'll ask her how she wants to proceed from here, since the pros recommend the sleeve be attached lower! :thumbup:

And I didn't mean to mislead everyone when I said the quilt will be in Houston - it will be hanging in a vendor's booth, not the show itself. My client was approached by a fabric manufacturer (Clothworks) who liked her quilt. They requested she write up a pattern for it and make a display quilt in their fabrics.

Way back when, I did the binding on a couple of early quilts that way - attaching the sleeve with the binding.

Yeah, it might be a bit more secure, but I've never had, nor heard of, a sleeve fall off while it was hanging.

I use a yard stick to give me enough slack in the hanging sleeve. I sew the raw edges of the sleeve on with the binding and then finish the binding as usual. Then when I'm ready to do the hand stitching on the sleeve I take a yard stick and put it thru the sleeve and then push it up so it's just below the top edge of the binding and re-iron a new crease in the sleeve for the hand stitching line.

Please remember to turn your quilt every 3 months or so when they are hanging so the fibers will not all go to one end. I put a sleeve on each end of mine if they are going to hang.

Shouldn't the quilting keep the fibers where they belong? I've only made a couple of wall hangings and didn't have a problem but I don't hang my quilts for months so I don't know.
