Happy camper
:D Husband bought me a featherweight 221. In beautiful condition, and I have the original sales receipt.
The receipt is dated October 10,1949 and the price was $145.00. She paid $10 a month. I have all the attachments she bought for it. It was a great find at a decent price. Now I get to learn how to use her. Oh, her name is Lucy. :D:):) |
Congratulations!!.....and I love your avatar!

Congrats, and happy stitching!
what a treasure
That is great! I imagine you were happily surprised to see him come home with it!!
Fabulous! My DH bought me one a couple of years ago, but, paid a fortune for it - he said he bought it because he was tired of me "talking about wanting a Featherweight". Anyway, he went to the local sewing machine/vacuum cleaner repair shop and the guy there knew of a woman wanting to see her mother's machine - WHY?????? When he brought it home it was threaded, top and bottom, and I plugged it in and it purred immediately. What a thrill.

Feel to the fold, lol. Love mine.
Congratulations!
wow, I would love one. My 185J is 3/4 size but weighs about 35 pounds!! Well, I don't move it too much, just twice a year.
How exciting!
How nice of your husband. $149 was a lot of money back in 1949. Or was that the price your DH paid?
they are so much fun, congratulations on your new "baby".
WOW...........what a great find. She will enjoy her new home and you will have a new friend!
That is terrific. Sounds like you have a keeper. Enjoy.
My husband bought one for me a few years ago. I just love having it, and it makes a beautiful stitch. Yours sounds like a great buy with the receipt and all. Enjoy sewing on it.
Congratulations on your new baby. How amazing is it to find the original receipt with the machine. Nice.
QuiltsrFun that was the original price. Love having that receipt. Hubby paid 3 times that.
Nice piece of history having the receipt and knowing the price in 1949.
Thanks for sharing the news of your lovely gift. Featherweights are adorable little work horses. Congratulations! And congratulations for having such a dear DH.
I inherited one, well used, and I love it.
I paid $350 for mine a few years ago. I know that was too much, but I really don't care. I had wanted one, found one, and bought it. It was well taken care of and sews beautifully. I love it.
$145. That was a lot of money in 1945. I didn't realize they cost so much originally. But they were well worth it since so many are still in good order today. Kind of justifies the high prices today. I wonder what the present day value of that $145 would be? Anybody have an idea?
Sew lucky! Congrats and enjoy! Can't put a price tag on the pleasure it will bring you!
He is a keeper and have fun. they sew great and not knowing I would want it I let mom give her's away to lady who cleaned for her and boy do I regret it, as I could have had it. It was a white one from 60's. Sewed great and maybe someday I will find one.

Out of curiosity, I looked up how to calculate the value of 1949 $ in today's money. Most of the calculator programs I found used the Consumer Price Index increase from 1949 to today (actually to 2014) and gave an answer of about $1440 for that $145 cost back then. So featherweights really were pricey little machines, weren't they? Should make most of us feel better about what we're paying for them today.

How nice! Enjoy!
