Hi, I was wondering if it is difficult to make a bag/sack or whatever one wants to call it to put a quilt in...I'm making a quilt for a charity auction and thought it would be nice to transport it in it's own bag...the quilt will be 68x81.

hummm that brings me to another question should I wash this quilt once it is done...

No it would be a breeze to make.

Yes, I always wash mine 1st, maybe personal choice, I think they look nicer.

After making a quilt the bag is nothing, couple of quick seems a hem and voila! instant bag!
Washing is highly suggested. I wouldn't let a quilt leave before I wash it. Makes sure colors don't run, stiches don't ravel, fabric doesn't pull weird.

You could make it like a large pillowcase or put handles on it (a pillowcase) to make a tote

I fold quilt measure it folded, then cut two nice pieces of fabric with seam allowances, make handles and sew the handles with the two fabrics wrong sides together then pull through and I should have a basic bag for the quilt...does that sound like it would work?

I make pillowcases for transporting my quilts.

It would be a great idea to make a pillowcase. I also heard if you used the same fabrics from the quilt it makes it easy to determine what quilt is stored inside. I would suggest measuring to find the appropriate size so the quilt will fit properly. I like the idea of additing handles as well as making it with a drawstring for quilt storage.

You could add a second fabric strips on the inside of the pillowcase hem to add the drawstring. Possibly being a double pull drawstring along with attaching handles on the inside of the border fabric. The drawstring can be made with bias tape that matches your fabric colors. With the handles added from the inside, they can be pushed into the quilt when using with a pillow. The handles could be made out of the same fabric as the quilt.

Another use then for the pillowcase is that when using the quilt, slip a pillow inside for a pillow quilt usage combination. With the pillowcase in mind check out the different sizes for regular versus larger sized pillows such as a king pillow case.If using the quilt and pillow by a child the handles would make for easy carry if taking to a sleep over.

Also forgot to mention the following. Look up instructions for french seam pillowcase. There are several You Tube videos, one for making a tube pillowcase for reference that is very good.

i just did it the hard way--groupe charity quilt felt i had to use the fabric the group donated +plus the odd left over pieced bits it looked good but nightmare to fix-----the pillowcase with handles sounds just the job---yes i washed befor and after -- folded the quilt to give the size needed for the bag-----
