OK, I think I have hit the wall of stash.. The true reason we all have "Stash"
I am trying to use my 5 year accumulation of stash for children's quilts ( to be donated to a children's hospital). Most of my quilts have been for baby cribs or tummy time. So I have great children stash.
But, I need a one or two blocks of fabric here or there and can not get it from a store, the fabric is not available.
Or, used for backing and my quilt back that was perfect, while quilting, the back became short and .. grr.. irregular shaped. I needed MORE than perfect for the back. Will always use white for the backing for these projects.
Blue, so many shades, yellow, too many shades, green, red .. ect.
<sigh> Hard to get rid of STASH when there is a real purpose.

Are you able to coordinate them with a solid or small print?, all yellows w/a purple or blue scrappy style?
oranges with the greens just a thought good luck you'll get it worked out :)

Thanks, I think my problem is that I have definate children's fabric of specific designs. I have grouped them, transportation, cats and dogs, flowers, spots, solid.

all for 6 in finished squares. but to get a quilt I need one block here, one block or two blocks there. grrr..

more of a chinese puzzle. I do know solid gives the eye a rest. Have that and it is easier that way.

will post pictures later. House is asleep.
Thanks for the idea though.

I like to donate to the animal shelter, making cat quilts with fabric that I know I will not want in my quilts. I use old flannel sheets for the batting. Its a great way to also practice doing free motion quilting. I know how much my cats enjoy the quilts I make them so I am sure the cats in the shelters waiting for new homes will love them too.

Please do, perhaps we can help. Are these flannels? Rag quilts work wonderfully with unmatched flannels.

I think you are trying to be to "perfect"? Kids really do not care if things match at all. I do not mean this as a criticism but the way we modern quilters look at fabric. I used to for sure until I decided to let go more.

I just finished a quilt with really different type of fabrics----I mean 1930----modern, etc. I am sure child will love it and look for all the different things on it. It was really outside the box for me. It is on my HQ16 or I could show you a picture.

consider more of an" I SPY" theme-- lots of different things, colors, shapes to "FIND" also known as SCRAPPY. sometimes we need to match, and sometimes we just need to let it flow. Kids are often just thrilled to have something new & theirs alone.

You could use random squares separated by a good basic wide sashing. I have come to like pale gray...it helps colors pop, doesn't get dirty as quick as white, isn't too dark, is gender neutral.

Another option is to embroider some squares with some easy redwork pattern or some such to fit in with a limited number of squares of fabric. Like if you have transportation fabric, have a few blocks with stitched wheels, or bones with dog fabric, etc.

Just a few thoughts!

When I buy fabric on sale or clearance I opt for yardage of the blender colors, tone on tone, and neutrals. I buy fat quarters and pre cuts of the pretty prints/colors to use as the focal parts of a pattern.
