To sew and quilt smaller blocks ? Like for cell phones, etc.
for a beginner. ????

sweet 06-06-2010 12:29 PM

I think what is important for a beginner is to start with something easy, like an easy block, rail fence and many others. A beginner needs to practice that silly 1/4 inch (I am still practicing that one).
If you want to do a small block, why don't you try a larger test one first!

MadQuilter 06-06-2010 12:31 PM

Small blocks with small pieces require more finesse on the seam allowance (at least that's what I found for me) and are therefore harder to handle. I would recommend a regular-sized block used for a pot holder. Small project - no worries.

thankyou madquilter and I love your pix of you wrapped in beautiful quilt!

sueisallaboutquilts 06-06-2010 01:53 PM

Hi there! Aren't you the woman who already made 2 quilts????
Or is that another person? :D
I wouldn't recommend really small, either.

quilterwanabe7 06-06-2010 01:56 PM

yes i am
ok thanks

littlehud 06-06-2010 02:45 PM

I wouldn't try something that small til you feel at ease with your seam allowances.

amma 06-06-2010 06:04 PM

It is easier for me to paper piece small blocks for those little projects :D:D:D

quilterwanabe7 06-06-2010 07:05 PM

paper piece means?

Quilter7x 06-06-2010 07:07 PM

I agree with the others, starting with something small could get way too confusing, so it's best to start with larger things. Place mats are perfect because they're small and if they don't come out perfect, oh well!

here is a video to watch on paper piecing just click on the arrow to start playing the video

From the title I thought we were gonna get to discuss something else. DARN IT!

sewcrafty 06-07-2010 03:59 AM

Since the pieces are soooo small, I use a wood meat skewer to feed them with. Make it easier.

flikkem 06-07-2010 05:59 AM

I regretted starting with a large project as a beginner. You will improve with time - start small.

I agree with starting with small project but not small pieces. That scant 1/4 inch seam is difficult to master.

quilterwanabe7 06-07-2010 06:58 AM

thanks will do

quilterwanabe7 06-07-2010 06:59 AM

Actually, I forgot about this, Rhonda has a bunch of tutes on the way she does miniatures. She has a different way of doing it than conventional piecing.

MoMoSews 06-07-2010 08:10 AM

I find the bigger the block the easier to work with.

quilterwanabe7 06-07-2010 08:56 AM

sewcrafty......who is rhonda and what r tutes?
:?:

MadQuilter 06-07-2010 09:01 AM

I can answer that too: Rhonda is one of the QB members who specializes in miniatures. Tutes are tutorials and you can find a variety in the tutorial section of the QB.

quilterwanabe7 06-07-2010 09:02 AM

madquilter; thankyou. I feel like I'm learning a whole new language.....and it's all addicting!

kclausing 06-07-2010 09:32 AM

for my first quilt, I tried something with small blocks. Ouch, turned out bad. Too much percision was needed.

So I changed to just doing large patchwork quilts. From there a started working on strip quilts, then some easier patterns. I still am not a perfect quilter, but I feel more comfortable tackling points (thought they rarely line up right). :)

Tutes are tutorials. Go to the main forum page and go under tutorials, you will see many tutorials posted by rhonda.

I personally like to make larger blocks, the easier the better. It makes the project get done faster and I can get to the quilting. It is also easier to find your mistakes if the blocks are bigger because the problem will show itself faster. I can always plan on having to do some ripping. The bigger the pieces the less likely I am to destroy them in the ripping process.
