Has anyone done this before?
 

I am Finally finishing a memory quilt for my mother (after 10 years in the making). Would it be weird to stitch in the ditch by machine the sashing areas and borders, then hand quilt ("big stitch) in each block, which is an Ohio star with a photo in the center? I have heard "there are no rules", but I often feel that there are. I am So thankful for this community, as I feel I can always turn to you for wonderful advice and help! Thank you for any comments and ideas! Although I have worked on quilting for over 10 years, I really haven't completed much , and I feel like a scared beginner! Thanks again!!!

Yes, I used to mix machine quilting and hand quilting a lot in my early quilting days.

I have done that with no problems.

Not at all, I have done it and the SID doesn't really "interfere" with the look of the hand quilting. Enjoy!

It's your quilt; it's your choice! It won't even "look weird", since stitch-in-the-ditch doesn't show!

No matter what U intend to later stitch, I always SID sashings and borders first. I call it putting bones in the quilt. And if you then add big stich quilting, I think it will look great. Maybe I’ll big stitch my next quilt, to give my shoulder its required rest.

I think mixing stitches/techniques is a fine idea!

If a person is intending to put a quilt into competition, it is probably a good idea to keep those "rules" in mind when choosing how the quilt is constructed. Otherwise, it is your quilt and, if it pleases you, it's a good idea!

I agree with Krisb about using SID to set up my quilts for quilting. I have found that SID along the sashing or around the blocks keeps me from wrinkling up my lining or accidentally getting a twist started. Since it is invisible on the front, why wouldn't you be able to add hand quilting to areas where you want that look? I see quilting as art. You are the artist in charge of your own quilt. Go for it!
