Has anyone done crazy quilting?

I saw this really cute Crazy Easter egg table topper on etsy and would love to recreate it. It is done in the crazy quilting style. I have never tried that and am wondering how to start. Do I just sew a bunch of scraps (different sizes and shapes) together, then cut out the egg shape, sandwich and quilt using different decorative stitches on the seam lines? Do I sew scraps together using a foundation or paper piecing method? Does it matter since this is a small project? Any good websites/books out there on this method?

I like the egg. I just did my first crazy quilt block and had fun using all the decorative stitches on my machine. Yes you start with a foundation and build fro that. Google crazy quilting and you will find many many sites and ideas. It is a lot of fun and the more you do the more ideas will come to you. Have fun.

You can see that that is made up of blocks of crazy quilt squares. That should help you. Looks good, I am sure yours will be fun and unique.

Yeah, this one is made from blocks, but your suggestion of just throwing together the pieces and then cutting the shape would work too! the method I saw was to sew your fabric to piece of muslin and then just keep adding scraps until the piece is covered! Good luck and let us know how it goes!

you place a center fabric piece and sew others around that. sew and flip, sew and flip. there should be tons of tutorials out there on crazy patch blocks.

As narnianquilter wrote, the picture is made of blocks that are oversewed with fancy stitches.
Or you can definitely make it in a truly crazy patch way and it would be great. The only special ruler I think you would need is a 1/4" one so you can trim after sewing each new material on to what you already have. Mine has a lip so it stays put. Crazy piecing is the only time I have put the iron near my sewing machine. Then I put on a timer so I wouldn't sit too long. It was fun. |
You can do crazy patch blocks and decorate them with your fancy stitches. If you look on www.quilterscache.com there might be a crazy patch block? Sew the blocks together and cut your egg shape. If you didn't put any batt in between the layers you old probably do the fancy stitches right through to the back but would you want to? That's a lot of thread ends to bury.
Any scrap square would work even the strip ones that Jenny Doan has just posted for Missouri Star Quilt Co. |
THanks everyone for the advice! I kept googling "crazy quilting" and not many tutorials came up. Once I googled "crazy quilt block", I found a bunch :) I will try using the muslin foundation technique for this....it seems to come out neater/ more exact than just sewing scraps together.

This looks to me like a Stack and Slash type of block. Just stack 6 fifferent colors together and slash into 6 different sections. There is a demo on you tube using 4 pieces of fabric, but it will give you an idea if you have never seen it before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsSp-FuZ1Ao
