I'm planning a trip to Maine this summer and noticed that there is a quilt show in Augusta, Maine in July around the time I'll be there. Has anyone gone before? I haven't been to a quilt show before. What can I expect? Any good quilt shops in the area or anywhere throughout Maine? Thanks.

That one's a bit too far away for me too! I went to my first quilt show last summer, it was the biggest one in the UK. It was awe inspiring (also a bit intimidating as I was just starting out with quilting and seeing all those amazing quilts on show made me wonder what I was thinking!!) and fun. It was a great place to get set up with the kit I needed, as the vendors usually do 'show speacials' on their prices. There were also demo's by the majoy sewing machine brands...Janome, Pfaff, Brother were all there, and you could try out all their different machines. I came home weighed down with bags and fabric and with about 200 photos on my camera. You should definitely go to the one in Maine!

It's been on my list of things to do for the last couple of years, but that's as close as I've gotten to actually crossing the state line and going! Here's some information about who and what will be there. http://www.mainequilts.org/Quilt_Show/index.html The folks that I have spoken with that did attend in past years have simply raved about it!! Have a great time in Maine, it's a fantastic place! :D

Oh yeah, here's a list of Maine quilt shops: http://www.mainequilts.org/Fabric_shops.htm

I have been to the quilt show in Augusta, Maine. I was very impressed, but have only been once and only to that one, so do not know how it compares to others. I did not get to go last year.

Two of the listed fabric stores I have been to are Cottonweeds and Calico Basket. Both are great. We also have a surplus store in Maine called Marden's. They carry quilt shop quality fabic. You can't go in there looking for something in particular, but I have gotten great buys there. Their web site addy is:

Not sure what areas of Maine you are going to (besides Augusta), but the Portland store DOES NOT sell fabric because they are in the same strip mall with Jo-Ann's fabric. The website gives a map of all the stores. I have only been to the ones in Lewiston and Sanford. You might want to call them before going to make sure that they carry fabric in that location. Their price for their fabric ranges from 2.69 to 3.99.

I hope you have a great time while you are here.

I have to agree I get almost all my fabric at Mardens - great quality and you simply cant beat the prices. The Sanford one is my store. Recently they just bought the remainder of fabric from a LQS in Salem, MA that had closed and it was simply wonderful, both in quality and design. Sew Portland is a nice store too. The people that work there are great and they have a nice selections of fabric and notions.
