Has anyone had fun w/patterns that call for 2 7/8" and 4 7/8"
 

Cutting out the Yo-Row Yosemite quilt kit designed by Mari Martin for Connecting Threads and a bunch of squares need at 2 +7/8th inch and 4+7/8th inch pieces so tricky to measure . Why not just round it out to 3 and 5 inch cubes- yikes. Has anyone out there made this one and can I just round out those numbers if enough fabric?

Are those squares eventually used for HSTs? Normally, you would add 7/8" to the target finished size (so like 2" and 4"). If there is enough fabric, you can cut the slightly larger size, make the HSTs, then trim them.

I am,with PaperPrincess. if they are going to be half square triangles I too would round up to the whole inch and trim down to size.

For patterns that call for those measurements, they're nearly always telling you to draw a diagonal line thru the square, then sew a quarter inch on either side, and cut between the two seams. There's cooridinating half square triangle dies for AccuQuilt Go in those measurements that has made my life so much easier: 55031 or 55063

I guess it would help if I read through the sewing instructions -ha. I can handle if for HST. I sure don't have funds for an Accuquilt die cutter being a senior citizen. Blessed that I can cut at all.:thumbup:

I always cut at the full measurements ( 2 7/8" = 3") then trim after making my units to the size they should be

I agree with rounding up and later trimming down. I would have problems cutting that accurately!!

That drives me nuts too. I would definitely make them larger and square down. If it's not a fabric kit. I think some kits are made mathematically and it may not have enough fabric.

Usually that is the size when HST are involved.

I worked on a quilt once that had small nine patches in a bigger block. The little blocks had to be 2-7/8 inches, and I huffed and puffed but finally did it and it wasn't so bad, and it really did have to be done that way. That said, for HSTs I always go bigger and trim down. Good luck with your project!

And I bet you'll have enough fabric - my experience is that Connecting Threads kits are very generous. Have fun!

I agree! It's the only thing that makes sense to me, too.

I did see Bloc-Loc rulers at the quilt show the other day that were these specific sizes. I think I heard that they had been made for some special patterns?? Must be someone using them.

Yup me too! I'm also a member. It can be tedious at times if there are tons of HST's to make but they are perfect when you are done.

I always cut to the next full inch and trim. HST's always turn out wonderful.

Yes, I have and I feel your frustration. It was a quilt called Across America or something like that name and had 50 states and each state had a block. Almost every block was like that. I just followed it exactly as I was concerned I wasn't experience enough to deal with it any other way.

I am with a lot of others here my eyes aren't what they used to be so I round up and trim later. This method has always worked well for me.

I have a slotted June Taylor ruler that has slots for cutting eights. Cutting 2 7/8" with it is a breeze. The ruler doesn't have slots for all eights; but does have the eights that are most commonly used in patterns. I'd be lost without that ruler!

Creative Grids has a ruler with only 7/8" markings. It makes cutting 7/8 measurements simple. On a regular ruler 7/8 is just one mark from the next whole inch on the average rotary ruler. I like to cut my hsts to size and not trim. Mostly I use my Accuquilt when possible.
