I have a Brother embroidery machine and yesterday in middle of an embroidery project, the thread kept breaking. It finally got so bad that the tension discs hidden inside the were jammed with thread bits, (I didn't find this out till a trip to the repairman where I purchased it) Apparently, with the auto guided threading, sometimes the thread doesn't go where it is supposed to go,(you cant see this happen) only to snap off later. Then you have no tension on the top thread and it results is a real jam under the presser foot. Guess what the repairman told me, I am not the only one, this is a design flaw in some of the Brother machines, no solution either.

My mom has a Brother embroidery machine, sounds like the same one!! I HATE this machine it never works right very cheap made, and without the card the you can use with it, You are so limited at what you can do!! When JUST sewing its not as bad but still have trouble with it! I want an embroidery machine but will never own one like this even if it was given to me!! I wish you luck with yours!!

I have a SE400 and I must say that I love it. I sure hope this isn't the one that you guys are having problems with.

This is my second, the first was the entry level and would only do 4 x 4 field, so I upgraded to the 1250D which uses a memory stick, it had been doing ok till now, but I think that for the money, I should have paid a little more and gotten one with a larger lcd screen and more edit capability in the machine, for instance I can't use many designs on the stick because the machine can't read so many and I can only change the size by 20 percent +/- so I have to use an embroidery software program to change things on the computer, and then save to the stick. If I hadn't had a computer I would be out of luck. Of course the auto threading helps with the multiple thread changes required, but not being able to see those tension discs is the pits.! :(

This is my second Brother and I wouldn't get anything else. Mine works great!!

sharon b 08-05-2010 08:47 AM

I have the SE270D and it has issues from time to time  I wonder if it is the top thread ?

Didn't someone say they just did a redesign and no more cassettes that is why they sold the 350 so cheap after Christmas . But I still love it , it is a GREAT entry level machine

I have an older Brother embroider/sew machine and have never had any trouble with it. It was over 2000 at the time though.

sewin'sam 08-05-2010 10:22 AM

I have 4 Brother machine, 2 of which are embroidery. I had some problems with them but not like you're talking about?? I bought the Quattro last year & am not really impressed with it because it just has too much stuff on it that I'lll never use! But it does a nice job of embroidery. I also have the QC1000 in-novis for quilting & I love it! Just had it serviced & was told that if there is any liint in the bobbin case, it blocks the sensors that tell the machine what to do! Don't understand why your thread keeps breaking? Is your thread getting caught on the cone? I do have that problem. I don't like the cone shaped spools, they don't feed as well. Good luck! How old is your Pug??? Adorable! Check my 2 in the picture.!

UglyCook 08-05-2010 10:32 AM

I wonder if it could be the thread? Some machines just don't like certain brands of thread.

Some of it was silk, and some sulky and some gutterman. I think it is in the plastic housing that guides the threads into the tension discs, as the repariman took off the top and showed me where it wasn't going under a metal plate and into the tension discs. I have probably been lucky before this.

UglyCook 08-05-2010 10:41 AM

My Brother machine HATES Sulky, LOL. It seems to jump all over the place. Have had mixed results with the Gutierman. I do best with Admelody and Robison Anton.

I consider my Sulky collection a wall decoration. :)

Oh dear, most of mine is sulky, where do you find the other threads? :?:

UglyCook 08-05-2010 11:16 AM

I order Admelody from www.bfc-stash.com

jhittlesewing has great prices on RA but you have to get packages of 3 spools per color.

shoppersrule has some ok prices on RA as well

I have a couple of spools of Coats and Clark that my machine likes much better than the Sulky, even. Go figure!

Thanks I will have to check that out, most of the time I just run to JoAnns because its close and I always have a coupon or two. :)

UglyCook 08-05-2010 11:26 AM

Maybe buy a spool of a couple of their brands. I'm no JoAnn's snob, I just get started with RA because my first machine worked best with it and then I switched to Admelody because it is really good and the cheapest I've found.

Like I said, my Brother does fine with Coats and Clark (which some people swear comes stratight from hell!) and JoAnn's has it.

I had the SE350 which I never had a problem with, the Innovis 1250D is the one I have now and is giving me the problems. I sold the SE 350 wish it would have had a bigger field, I would still have it and my$$!!

I think it happens also when you fabric isn't real snug or pulled tight in the hoop. Mine does not like sulky thread either. Anything that is loopy or twisteddoesn't work well. My friend told me not to use sulky when i purchased her machine. I purchsed some from ebay that works well. Will tell you the seller if you want to know. I bought some coats and clark but haven't tried it yet. Good luck.

Very interesting about the fabric texture and snugness of the hooping, I was using a textured tea towel doing cross stitch and had it in a magna hoop because the regular hoop left a hoop burn on the fabric and it was for a gift and I didn't want to have to launder newly done embroidery. Of course by the time I pulled the magna hoop set up off the machine for the 5th time it was positively sloppy! The project of course is toast and I have to start over, think I will find a different texture tea towel more smooth, and skip the magna hoop. I bought it to use for quilting and it didn't work for that either. DIME told me it was never intended to quilt. Thanks for the input. Oh Well. :-)

May I ask where you bought your machine and how long ago?? If you purchased it from a reliable Brother Dealer and they say there is a defect in the machine you bought, then you should make certain that they do something about it and they should. However, if you bought it at Walmart or off the internet, then you have a different story. The machines they sell at Walmart are not the same quality that are sold through a dealer and they often have flaws or flimsier parts because they are mass produced at a lower price (cheaper quality) to supply the lower end market of the discount stores. With an embroidery machine when the thread starts breaking, you need to check out the thread you are using, the bobbin and change the needle more often. I have owned three Brother machines all purchased at a brother dealer and have only experienced minimal problems.

I purchased it from a local Brother dealer, Ace sewing. The repairman had another Brother machine there at the same time with the same problem and said the problems are stemming from thread not being guided into the proper channels inside when pulling through the outside guides. I plan to contact Brother about this and thats one reason I was wondering if others have had this problem. Just making sure that the reason stated for the problem is really the problem. Thanks for your input.

:D :D :D

A Brother dealer down in Florida told me that the automatic threader has been left off the newer machines, because it was such a trouble maker. Maybe you should thread the machine by hand and not use the auto threader.
Don't feel bad about having a problem machine. My Janome 11000SE refuses to boot up, until you turn it on/off 10-20 times. When I take it in for repair, the repair person cannot duplicate the problem. No, it's not my power supply. I've tried it in different places, different surge protectors, even different houses. Plus the light comes on at first, then shuts itself off. I am just living with it. Guess you'll have to do the same with your Brother:-(

I figured out the auto threader, it operates about 90% of the time,it is the channels, "tracks" that the thread goes through to pull it through the tension discs sometimes it doesnt pull far enough to the back to go under the flat plate that loads it into the tension discs, no way to tell when you are pulling the threads through, and no way to operate the machine when that part of the cover is off (so the repairman says) but if it keeps happening, I am going to try anyway.
Sorry about your machine, it sounds to me like a loose connection (wire inside of coating may be separating, see if it happens with another foot control), or the other thing it might be since light comes on then goes off, make sure the wattage for your light bulb is correct. I have a few Featherweights and if the light bulb is anything more than a 15w they heat up and then lock up until the machine cools down.
:D :-)

that was my first thought...I have 2 brothers 270D and 8500 and love both of them....sometimes the 270 has bobbin problems but works best with prewounds...

I have the 780D and I've noticed it doesn't like certain COLORS of certain brands. I've found two: Like sulky black. or a goldish yellow shade of Madera that is one of my school colors.

If I use the other brand of those two colors, she's fine. Unless I've used the wrong stablilizer. But I can't be mad at her because I don't know what I'm doing...

I've also found a few times as I thread a new color that a "clump" of the last thread color will come out, like it was fraying and about to break. Sounds like the start of your problem, but not quite there yet.

I have a Brother LB-6770 embroidery machine and I love it, have had no problems with it. My wife has a Brother 6000D embroidery machine (the huge one) and she loves it, too, great machine. For piecing, I use a Brother QC-1000 machine, which is wonderful. I can't say enough good things about Brother machines, love them. :)

salsalady 09-14-2010 01:16 PM

hi i use madeira rayon thread. was told not to use coats and clark. ikno that your project can be to lose but some of mine i thought were to tight because of the strain on the project u r embroidering some of mywork was puckering

ccb2200 09-14-2010 01:39 PM

I have a Brother Innov-is 1500D. I've had it for about 5 years and I have never had any problems with it. I love this machine.

retired2pa 09-14-2010 01:48 PM

I have 3 Brother machines. They all do different types of sewing and I love them all!! I have a ULT2003D and use the embroidery a lot and have never had a problem. I use Madiera thread. Be sure you are using the right needle also. Make sure it is for embroidery and the right size.

Maride 09-14-2010 01:53 PM

The only time i had trouble with threads breaking with my embroidery Brother was when I changed my stabilizer. I always use a cheap one I get by the roll, no brand name, with no problem. When I switched to Steady Stuff by Ricky Tims, the thread broke every 2 seconds. Back to the cheap one, no broken thread. Just something else to look for.

How to get to tension discs Brother Quattro 2

This is an old thread but it still is relevant. I continually get thread stuck in the tension discs which leads to Birdsnest, thread shredding and thread breaking. I take it to a wonderful professional and they clean it out but it happens frequently enough that I would like to be able to fix it myself. I can’t find a video on YouTube that shows me how to open up the top part of the machine. Some of the newer and different makers have easy access to this part of the machine which will be kept in mind for my next upgrade. Has anyone opened this part of the machine before and do you have pictures or instructions on how to do it? And to put other questions to rest, I use high-quality thread, have no burrs or rough parts on any of my equipment including the lower parts of the machine. That’s been checked. It’s always the tension discs.
thank you.
