Thought I'd jump right in on this board. So here I go.

I have the pattern and the fabric. I've pieced 5 practice blocks to make sure I could do it and apparently, I can't. The geese blocks are just a bit too big for the star sections and it won't go together smoothly.

I'd say I was an intermediate quilter and this shouldn't be beyond my reach, but for some reason I just can't get it to work out. Does anyone have any tips? Anything you learned while making it that I'm just not seeing?

The circle of flying geese are probably best made by Paper piecing the geese and the arc around the stars. PP is much more accurate. I don't have the pattern but that is what it looks like to me.:)

I have not made this quilt but it is on my to-do list. I have some questions:

1. How much too big are your geese units in comparison to the side of the star block you need to attach them to?

2. Is each flying geese unit too big the same amount all the way around no matter which goose unit you try to match up to any of the sides?

3. Is the variance small enough that you can "ease in" the goose units or stretch the star unit a bit?

4. Do you have enough wiggle room on you goose unit points that you can take in your joining seams just a tad or will you lose your triangle points by doing that?

5. Did you use a scant 1/4" seam allowance when assembling the stars?

I'm no help to you but I also recommend paper piecing the units! Welcome to the board from Indiana!!!!

The geese are significantly bigger. Too much to ease in.

I'll go home, put them all on my design board and see exactly what the problems are - specifically.

I think this is an intermediate quilt, don't you? No set in seams (haven't quite mastered that yet, still get little puckers). I'm sure I can do this if I can just work past my issues.

Okay, now I forgot the rest of the questions. I'll have to go look again. :)

Now I never really thought about pping the geese unit. I can do that. I love pp. Why didn't I think of that?

I'm very careful with my scant 1/4" seam. I reset it and make sure it's right each time I clean the machine.

Some patterns are not accurate, don't assume it is all your fault!!:):):) Recheck them also.

Now THAT never occurred to me. I never even thought about a problem with the pattern. I just assumed it was me. I will really go over this when I get home.

I've seen this quilt finished in person at a local shop. I too would love to do this one. The one I saw was a 2 color top.

When my LQS went out of business, I bought some gorgeous Christmas fabrics - traditional colors - red & green batiks, a gorgeous christmas print and a wonderful shimmery neutral. I can picture this quilt in my head and I'm practically driven to make it in those fabrics.

Agreed. Sounds like the pattern may be off. The pattern I have for this I got from the great American Quilts book for 2000 or 2001 can't remember which. It has templates. I have not actually attempted any tests of the templates.

OP, if your pattern is also templates, I recommend tracing them out and then cutting them out without seam allowances and then lay them out like a jigsaw puzzle to ensure they fit together. If they do not then you know the problem is with the pattern and not your piecing and you will have to redraft the pattern or find another source for it. If they do fit together properly, I'm not sure what to tell you as it sounds like all your piecing is in order.

I do know one of our board members did make this pattern. here is a link to his pictures. Not sure where he got his pattern from so I do know there are good patterns out there.

Welcome from Ohio. That's a beautiful quilt to tackle. I think it's on the high end of intermediate. Let us know when you figure out what's going on with the pattern. Also, what book did it come from? I looked at the links provided, but it lists many books. See, you've started something here. LOL

Hi! I'm the blogger whose blog QuiltnNan linked to, and I had an amazing number of visits from this board as a result of her post! I hope my link to the book on Amazon containing the pattern for the Dizzy Geese quilt I'd photographed proved helpful, and that everyone enjoyed their visit.

I just stopped by today to let you know that our library held its annual quilt show again last month, and I just posted the first in a series of four (or more?) posts about it. I think our local quilters outdid themselves this year, and thought you all might enjoy seeing the fruits of their labors. No Dizzy Geese quilts in this year's exhibit, but Part 2, which I'll post early next week, will have a pretty Flying Geese quilt photo! :o

Whoa, the quilt on laloofa's blog is a knock-out. (Thanks for the link to the book.) isewman's is 100% different with the white background. It IS easier to see the assembly on the white one.

I would say that it's probably paper pieced too. But as much as I love to pp, I'm not sure I would want to try it.

I finished this quilt about 2 months ago. What a time consuming job. Well over 400 flying geese. Yes, I counted them!!!! Most of the geese I paper pieced then I switched off using the large square and four smaller square method. It took me at least a month working everyday, 6-8 hours a day to complete it. Certainly not for the faint hearted. Be glad to answer any questions you may have just PM me.

I have made this quilt and its not that bad really....... I did paper piece the borders, did the blocks the usual way. Did you cut your triangles cross grain? maybe they are stretching a bit? Dont give up, just starch, press and trim. I dont recall using a scant 1/4" seam,,,, maybe try a scrap block with the full 1/4" ?

I am making a Dizzy Geese quilt top. It is a difficult pattern to make but so worth the effort. My geese were a tad too small for my center star and when put together, gave my block an "A" cup..... I found that by stitching the small squares just beside the line made the difference for me. You just have to figure out what works for you.

I may be able to help you with this problem since I have no clue about the flying geese problem. I think you my be taking one stitch too many when you are doing you set-in seams. I know one stitch doesn't seem like much but it did cause my first couple of attempts to pucker. Also when do set-in seams make sure you back tack.

This pattern is on my bucket list!

I have made this. It took me 8 hours to complete the first block after redoing 4 times. You have to make sure your 1/4 inch is right on. When you put together the corner clocks move your needle once or twice to the right. I used the "scant" 1.4 inch for the entire corner block. This is absolutely the key to making it all fit.

And 6 years later, I am having the same challenges the OP of this thread is having! Not sure if she still reads this board, but I would love to see her quilt and advise! :)
