Has anyone made a quilt out of socks?
So my daughter has Tons and Tons of socks, all colors and designs. I was thinking it could be fun to make a "quilt" or blanket out of them. Has anyone done this? Can you give me ideas or suggestions?
I looked on Pinterest last night and didn't see much. I did not like the look of a whole sock on a quilt overlapping with other socks or a drying line with socks hanging from it. Several thoughts I had. Idea A was to cut the "foot" off the sock and be left with a square/rectangle tube. Then sew the ends closed and then sew the squares together. The pro - I would be creating the front and back of the quilt at the same time. The con - I'm not sure of all of that could be done on my machine. Idea B is to take the sock without the foot part and cut it open and sew the socks together into a top. and then create a quilt with a backing. (the con, how stable would this be?) - how Or C was sewing the sock squares to fleece and use the fleece as a stabilizer. Obviously I can play with some socks and see how my ideas are working, but if you have any words of wisdom it would be appreciated! |
Socks are knit, so they are not stable like a woven cotton is. They would be hard to work with, like T-shirts are. Maybe a stabilizer on the reverse could make it work, as is done with T-shirts, if the knit isn't a bulky one. Working with socks wouldn't interest me at all, not with cottons so available. Good luck if you pursue it!

How about you and your daughter make a sock animal zoo or a sock rug?

have you thought about crocheting them together, an afghan of sorts?

Check out the quilts made from knit sweaters. Kind of the same idea, maybe you can adapt to socks?

Here's one
http://www.iseeidoimake.com/how-to-m...-out-of-socks/ I once posted the link and many commented on how long the thing would take to dry. I'm just thinking it would be hard to use your bed to fold laundry. |
It would not be for me.

You know..... this is a great idea - I hadn't given this much thought in the past while kids were growing up - and there are always those "lost" socks with no mate to live with. and in thinking about your idea, I thought about one to add to your adventure. Not only would each sock have a life of it's own, but also using all of those scraps of batting that have no real life ahead because they are too small and filling each sock, like a small pillow. You're welcome :)

My daughter has a lot of novelty socks. Think Harry Potter, frogs, unicorns, etc. They are not generally the best quality socks, and wear out quickly on the bottoms. They would make cute appliqués for quilt blocks. I might save them, along with tall the Harry Potter shirts she has accumulated. and use them in the border of her quilt.

All I can think of is more of an afghan rather than a quilt. I don't crochet but I knit. That's the first thing that popped into my head.
Very cute idea! I'm also a sock freak :) |
