Has anyone made something and not know if you like it?

Good morning,

I am assembling a grocery bag holder and I am not sure if I like the colors I chose. Has anyone ever made something and didn't love it but didn't hate it. Thanks for any input. :)

bkay 06-23-2017 06:27 AM

I finished a quilt top a couple of months ago that I didn't like enough to have it quilted. I packed it up with it's backing fabric and put it in the top of the closet. I'm not sure if I'll ever get it down.

I think I'm usually pretty decided on whether I'm liking something or disliking it. Maybe ask yourself specific questions about this one, to try and pinpoint what's bothering you.

Oh yeah. I have a quilt (top) I've dubbed "the ugly quilt". It started with a layer cake in a fabric line I really liked, but I picked a bleh solid to go with it. The solid matches some of the layer cake fabric perfectly but it was just the wrong choice and now that it's all put together I don't like it at all. Some day I'll finish it into a quilt and start showing it to people - someone will love it. It's not truly terrible, just not to my taste, at all. It's grown on me a little bit, but not enough to make me want to finish it for myself.

Found a picture of it. :)

I'm sure many charities would be very glad to have them. And/ or many groups will be glad to finish them. I think we all have something like that! Sonoma, I kinda like yours!

pewa88 06-23-2017 07:27 AM

Yes, as quilters we all have these ugly ducklings hanging around. Best thing to do, sandwich them, quilt or tie them and donate them. Someone will be thrilled to have your rejects.

pewa88 06-23-2017 07:28 AM

Sewnoma, that would make a great kids quilt or picnic quilt. Finish it and then relish that feel good feeling.

Maureen NJ 06-23-2017 08:58 AM

Sewnoma, why don't you use yellow or bright green thread to tone down the gray. I agree, it would make a great picnic quilt or child's quilt.

meyert 06-23-2017 09:05 AM

all of the time :) Alot of times I put them away and after time I pull them back out and they don't seem so bad. I do always try to finish them even I don't like them. There is no accounting for taste and more often than not something I don't like someone else will. So I donate what I don't want to gift to someone or keep for myself.

I think you should finish this - it will look great with some red or blue binding or even scrappy binding. it will be a great kids quilt

toverly 06-23-2017 09:33 AM

All the time. I quickly pass along the items I don't love.

MadQuilter 06-23-2017 09:40 AM

I don't decide whether I like it or not until it is completely finished. Most of the time a project that leans toward "meh" turns out really pretty in the end.

I like it. It makes me think of "Asian Modern" or "industrial Colors"

And/or the intensity of the colors after a rain-storm but there are still some clouds in the sky.

Jane Quilter 06-23-2017 11:00 AM

I made a butterfly quilt on gray fabric and thought it was blah and ugly, so I added fake flowers about it and it looks so much better. My 6 yr old DGD, the recipient of this quilt, wants some yo yos for flower centers now that she has seen it. I told her to snap to it, making yo yos with the template and I will sew them on. (see 2nd pic on:)

that's what I do on an ugly quilt, just keep adding till I like it. Yours definitely needs a bright binding and has plenty of room for applique and/or additional designs. So "snap to it" (LOL) and you will soon love it. Personally, I think it is a great start.

MadQuilter 06-23-2017 11:22 AM

Sewnoma, those grey areas are great for doing some fancy FMQ. I think it looks very modern.

Sewnoma 06-23-2017 01:24 PM

See? Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. :) I see 'bleh' but you guys are seeing all sorts of possibilities!

The colors are probably a little off in the photo - the grey is actually an army green color. I thought it would tone down some of the nearly-neon brights, but...it doesn't thrill me. It's "OK". I WILL finish it some day. SOME day.

(I have a whole pile of tops I haven't finished into quilts yet, but we won't talk about that! LOL)

Jingle 06-23-2017 02:11 PM

I have started quilts to donate that I wasn't real happy with. By the time I get them done I really like them. Finish up UFOs and donate them. We are not always good judges of our own work. Others may love them, especially if they are free.

Evie 06-24-2017 06:53 AM

If it's something that doesn't "speak" to me, I have feel no guilt donating it.

marge954 06-24-2017 07:01 AM

Oh my gosh yes times two! I made a top to see if I would like using the pattern and it reminds me of the creamsicle ice cream pops we ate as a child. (hated the pattern) Just finished one and am wondering why in the world I picked out that jelly roll. That top looks like Valentines Day threw up. I think it would be great if there was a category here where we could trade the top we made and don't like with a top that someone else made that they don't like:)
Sewnoma: I love your top!!!!!

momsbusy 06-24-2017 07:48 AM

I donate my projects (quilts, crafts, etc.) that I'm not crazy about. Someone will love it. Sometimes I like my quilts better after quilting and binding.

klswift 06-24-2017 07:49 AM

And that is why so many of us have a stash of quick gifts - that box to go thru for the fast housewarming, thank you or just because gift. We may not care for it, but someone else will be delighted to get a handmade item from you!

klswift 06-24-2017 07:54 AM

I have mentioned before that I have a couple pizza boxes (not used) that I keep sample blocks in. These are either new patterns or new color combos or whatever that I was playing with. (The cardboard box is good because of any moisture the blocks may have from being worked on.) I will often go to these boxes and find a block to put on the outside of a tote bag as a gift (or container for a gift)or line one, fold in half and make it into a wine bag. This is better and cheaper than gift wrap and the person feels they are getting an extra present. It also lets me feel less guilty about trying out lots of new pattern designs , color combos or oddball fabrics.

I like your ugly quilt.

bearisgray 06-24-2017 08:24 AM

or married someone and not sure you like him/her afterwards?

(Sorry - that was off topic - but I was unable to resist)

Mariah 06-24-2017 11:02 AM

Yes, it has happened with me also. Sometimes when I work on something a long time, I want to cut it up into little it up into tiny pieces and never see it again! I think we tend to expect too much of ourselves in too short a time.
Or, that is my observation of my quilting experience.

RedGarnet222 06-24-2017 11:51 AM

Good heaven's ... Yes! But, it usually is something I am making for someone else and made to their taste. But, there are a few finishes that I had to put away after completing them just because I was sick of them by the time I finished it. Then, when I get it back out, I think, Hey what was the problem? I like it.

Mostly the regrets I have are over artsy fabric. I wonder what I was thinking when I bought it. I never can find anything to go with it or just the right pattern to showcase it right, so it taunts me from the closet. Know what I mean? I have a stack of these buggers.

sewnclog 06-24-2017 12:30 PM

I like it too but then I do like grays.

quiltykiwi 06-24-2017 03:28 PM

I kind of like that quilt, but think I might put some sort of applique or motif in the large gray areas so that it doesn't "grab" so much attention. I have several of partly finished quilts that I have "gone off the boil to finish" (big wrist slap here)

tessagin 06-24-2017 03:33 PM

I love your quilt and the fact your solid is grey goes with some of the yellow circled and grey fabric. I think if you bound it with that great looking bright blue it would make it all come together. That's a great idea for all those extra quilt blocks!
I do that all the time, make something I begin to detest, sometimes so hard to finish but I do since 97% of my things are given away

I agree with Maureen's idea. The thread color can really change the final look of a quilt.

Another idea for you: Applique shapes would add interest in the 4 solid grey areas that come together in a 4 patch. I like all the colors in your quilt. I hope you have fun finishing it.

WMUTeach 06-25-2017 05:14 AM

You bet 'ya! I just made a baby quilt but when I got it finished it was just not what I would want to give the the new mom. A good idea gone south/bad/off the road and over the cliff. I just added another quilt to my pile of donation quilts.

I completely agree with this. Back when I was a baby quilter, I didn't like how a quilt top I made had turned out. I had tried to recreate the one on the cover of the book, but couldn't get the right fabrics and colors, so I was disappointed. I gave the top to a friend who does a lot of quilting for charity, and told her when she was done quilting it, she could pass it along to a certain charity. She finished it and showed it to me and I absolutely LOVED it. But, I had said I'd give it to the charity, so I did.

Lesson learned. Finish it before deciding if you like it or not.

GingerK 06-25-2017 03:34 PM

I think every one of us has a 'oh my gosh what was I thinking' item. Nothing wrong with that. If you finish it and still absolutely hate it, gift it to someone else or a charity. Chalk it up to experience and move on. Life is too short and there are too many other patterns to try.

shadoh 06-25-2017 03:44 PM

Beautiful, great colours.
