A dear family friend has a scrappy his mother pieced that he asked me to quilt. I told him, I only do for us (because of my disabilities it often takes me a while to do one.)
Anyway, I gave in related to his mothers health. He brought it and it is double knit. I was wondering if anyone else has quilted one on their machines. I have a JUKI and love it, but I'm nervous about this.
Any advice? :?:

I only tie these quilts, there would be alot of stretching on a machine. JMO.

I have two or three big tubs full of knit & polyester that was given to me when my friends grandma died. I hate to get rid of it...but I don't really have time right now to experiment with how it sews and comes together. I'm sure I will eventually get there as I hate to waste it. Lots of colors thats for sure. =) I have a quilt my grandma made that is knit. She hand quilted it on a frame in her garage that she had hung from the ceiling. =)

If you do decide to quilt this, I suggest using polyester thread and a ball point needle and large stitch. Do not put a lot of tension on the frame because of stretching. Watch the thread tension.

I made two double knit (polyester) quilts from "grandmas'" old clothes for daughter and granddaughter. I used a decrotive (*) stitch on my machine and tacked every 3-4 inches as if I were tieing it. The quilts turned out beautiful as I used half triangles as well in the blocks. The ladies loved the quilts. They were double bed sized and I backed each of them with polyester bed sheets. With the knitted sweaters, I made throw pillows from them. They went over big with the daughter and granddaughter as well. I too have tubs of polyester fabric gifted to me from deceased older women's stash. I will either make quilts or cut into strips and make crocheted rugs. I made a couple of throw rugs from some of that type of fabric from my own stach, purchesed years ago. Good luck! Mary

My grandmother used to hand quilt double knit quilts all the time.. I have quilted a few small doublt knit items on my domestic machine... Stretching is a huge issue.. I find if I quilt my double knit with a cotton backing that is preshrunk it works fine.....
I"m in the middle of quilting some double knit that was donated to me to use for my American Veterans Project....
I have done a couple of these for the Veterans.. u should see the older folds flock to the stuff..... they love double knit....

I've quilted tops with double knit pieces in them (along with other fabrics) and it quilted fine. But I've not done one that is double knit only. If you do decide to tackle this with quilting ad not tying, I'd do a full float for the top and not attach the lower edge of the quilt top to the bottom roller. I'd also do something simple like a large meander. JMHO.
