Has Aurifil 50wt changed?

I bought a reel today from a local quilt shop, it feels thinner and quite wiry. Stitches ok and I was able to thread a size 10 needle in my featherweight 1st time lol

I haven't bought any in a while, will look forward to other replies.

I work at a quilt shop and we just received a new shipment of Aurifil threads and I haven't noticed any difference in the thread. We usually open a spool of thread so you can see the actual color better so we would have a chance to notice any change. We also have to show people the spool cap can be removed! It's like a magic trick. LOL

I use to use it for piecing and still have spools of it of pretty colors for machine applique. The last big spool of piecing thread I used kept breaking so I haven't bought any more. Shop where I bought it said Aurifil was thinner because it was 2 ply so it would break faster then the 3 ply thread. I said I know it is 2 ply who doesn't? But it has never broken so much before.

I had this happen when I was sewing batik blocks together. I was using a 80/12 universal needle. When I changed to a 90/14 micro tip the breaking stopped. Might be worth the try. I love Aurifil thread.

And just like that I perform another magic trick. LOL

Working with a black spool of RA rayon that shreds easily. Not Aurifil, but I remember years ago, that my quilt shop owner said that the darker colors especially black are difficult to manufacturer because of needing to dye the fibers black and that it takes a lot of processing so black is often the weakness thread in the line. I don't know if it also applies to cotton though.

The older Aurifil threads do not break when I sew. The last new spool kept breaking using the same size needle that works with the older Aurifil. I doubt I will buy another $12 spool to chance it.

Are you sure it's 50wt and not 80wt?
