That has happened to me. Sometimes I'll work on a smaller project w/fabric I like and forget about the "ugly" quilt. Usually when I get back to it, its not as ugly as I remember it. Sometimes a little time and distance helps. Make sure you post some pics so we can all tell you how great it looks.

I sort of understand. My sister has always loved purple and quite frankly, I hate it. So when she requested a quilt for her queen bed, guess what she wanted? So, being that I love my sister, I made her a quilt 108 x 108 inches in so many shades of purple! Despite the color choice, I was quite pleased with how it turned out and my sister absolutely loves it! So, regardless of how you feel about the quilt, think about how much HE will enjoy it! (and he really will!)

Yes and now I say at the beginning I prefer which patterns and fabric to use. I made just a table runner for a dear friend, an artist, who wanted something in dark greens and charcoal and light greys. He chose the fabric and the colours were gorgeous and the pattern an 8 point star, also gorgeous and a joy to watch evolving. But the hand quilting was murder on the eyes. Colours you don't like or can't work with are a difficulty and quilting, unless you do it professionally and don't care about these aspects of it is such a 'soul' and spiritual, meditative practice you should do something that brings you pleasure. It should be possible to find colours and patterns that are mutually satisfying. Maybe you can combine what he wants with some blocks in complementary tones or colours that are better for you, he'll probably like it better in the long run too.

More than once!! Just keep telling yourself that it's going to be worth it when it's "finally" done. Then reward yourself with something just for you.
I am also working on one I'm not crazy about. It's for my daughter and her boyfriend's king size bed! The colors are boring and I will be happy to give it to them and be done with it.
Yes. I once got roped into making up a kit for a friend, and I hated every minute of it. I just worked on it nonstop until I could finish it and put it behind me. It was a good lesson in saying no next time. And I will. Never again.

Have a UFO that I am totally uninterested in, but it is for my wonderful niece and so I'm trying to stay focused on that. Don't like the fabric, don't like the pattern and I'm still trying to figure out why I started the diddly burn thing.
After reading all of these, I feel that we all have at least 1 quilt that we hate/hated putting together. I will now pick fabrics and patterns with care!
These days, I just offer someone their pick of my UFOs - that helps me finish them, too.
o my , I saw a beautiful one in plaid so I have started to collect the fabric. It will be better than you now think. and your brother will love it. Keep positive, it will be great and the more you do the faster you will be done.lol

When working on a quilt that I dislike, I usually have another more enjoyable project going at the same time. Work a little on one---then work a little on the other.
Pretty soon the hated quilt isn't so much of a chore anymore. |
I hate all my quilts at a given point I FIND THAT I DO TWO QUILTS AT A Time AND STAY WITH THEM 2 WEEKS ON AND OFF .They both do get done but it does take longer.I am making queen sized at this time and alternating between paper piecing and a simple pattern.
That happens to me, I try working on a small side project that I like to dilute the anxiety and resentment.
Good luck! |
Think how happy your DB will be when you give him the quilt. This is for him, not you. Smile and carry on!!!
I have just had a similiar experience - http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-133869-1.htm
You may not like it at first, but the one receiving it may be so delighted! Keep going! |
I have UFO's that I probably won't finish for the same reason--don't like the looks of it. So, yes this happens to most of us. It might help if you were to devote only so much time a week to this project and give yourself off time to do something else sewing or not related. The break might help it feel less of a burden. good luck!:)

I've been "working" on one that I can't stand since last summer. The top is done but needs squaring up/trimming, simple borders put on and then finishing. I think a big part of the problem is that I agreed to make the quilt but don't like the recipient. I have set a goal to give it this year as a Christmas gift....I gave the top last year so I need to give the finished quilt this year.
I done 2 back to back last Christmas Major color for both quilts was- Red -All the way thru I grumbled and groaned -cursed and kicked But the hugs and smiles I recieved were so worth it I'd do it again So go finish that quilt The results are PRICELESS
Unless there is some reason you have to finish this quilt, don't. The whole idea behind quilting (or any hobby for that matter) should be about creativity and enjoyment. If you are really hating working on it that much, you can't be enjoying yourself. Some things are better left unfinished.
I decided to slow down on quilts for a while this summer and work on some Christmas gifts. No one in particular in mind, just smaller stuff. Lap quilts, mug rugs, table toppers, etc. and I am having a lot of fun with it. Maybe if you gave yourself a little break from it and worked on some small stuff it would help the way you feel.
It's not the first time and it may not be the last, but I think we all go through a phase where we don't like the quilt we're working on. If you have the time, can you put it away for a little bit and then come back to it? Sometimes that helps. Just remember who you are makingit for and when you're done, make something just for you. We all hit snags now and then.

Yes, I have struggled thru some patterns (or with some colors) that I thought would NEVER end. One method I sometimes use is to combine a "dog" with something I love.
"If I do XX number of the dog project, then I GET TO work on the other project for a while." It really works for me. One thing I can tell you is that you will feel so good (relief, resolve, even excitement) when that quilt is FINISHED! AND when you give it to your DH, the appreciation will probably make you feel a little guilty for waiting so long. |
It has happened to me, but when it was quilting, I had to admit, it wasn't too bad after all. But glad it was leaving my house!!! Jan

I felt the same way making the quilt my sister-in-law wanted. I liked it once it was completed, and she did too.

Oh, geez. I feel for you. Last fall when I had been quilting for all of 6 months, my aunt asked me to make a quilt for her grand daughter's high school graduation this spring. I kept telling her the pattern she chose was way beyond my capabilities at that stage, but she kept insisting and coercing until, to shut her up, I said I would try. Well, the pattern was laid out in diamonds and I was so frustrated that at the midway point I ripped the entire thing apart and started over. The colors were beautiful as was the pattern; it had huge red or blue horses and the GD is an accomplished horsewoman. So after 160 hours, much screaming and many tears I finished the project. The GD LOVED it!!! Then, of course, my aunt told everyone she had paid for the quilt and I just sewed it together! NOT!!! And never again, never, ever -----
Yes, I do know that feeling. Two years ago I made DH a quilt. I hated every block I did, but he loves it. We have slept under that quilt for two years and I still don't like it and he still loves it! Some things are just to hard to explain but stick with it. He will love it enough to make it worth while. :)
OHHHHH! :x
make a deal with another quilter and make a quilt they like and maybe they will do this quilt for you.
Bless your heart... Just think about how your DB will love it! Maybe that will help with the quilting blues.
I am currently working on one I totally hate. It is taking me forever just because I dread even looking at it. I know some hospice patient will need it and might even like it but I wish I had never started it.
Using a collection of 84 chicken kitchen towels all one of a kind I made 2 queen sized quilts for my husband. First turned out perfect second one quilting got bunched up behind and I did not notice. All work done by hand. Did not finish the binding on the second one yet but intend to try and slash and slip stitch the backing to flatten out during the winter months. Too warm now to do this heavy thing over my lap. Good luck to you just remember you work is the best ever the pattern is his choice. All quilts are made with love.
no ,sorry ,did a batik and it was dreadful allthe way thro!
I made two lap quilts for my family room chairs, I liked the fabric until I cut it and started sewing it together, I thought that I would have to donate them to a home for the blind, I was so disappointed. But after I finished them I loved them. when everything came together they were great. So remember things change. Good luck and let us see when you are done.

My DB was always talking about my quilts. I made him a quilt in his favorite colors. I choose a fancy quilting patter to hand quilt. It was queen size. He died about 3 yrs later. My quilt was on his bed when he died. Think how much interest he showed in helping with the pattern. Yeah, Db are worth it all. Show him you love him while you can.

I have one that is only 9 blocks, and it will likely never be finished. It was a block of the month class, and fabric choice was not an option....everyone got the same fabric. That should have been my first red flag....it is all dark batiks,(only one lighter one), and I am not a batik fan. Had I been able to choose my own fabrics, it would have been finished ages ago. Now it is sitting with only the first 3 blocks done. Since it was for me, I don't care if it ever gets done. Maybe one day. :(
