Not on the subject but ...
Catrancher, I love your cats. ali |
I also read that you shouldn't put out thread or fabric scraps as they stay wet too long. Straw, feathers, etc. dry much faster and the birds can get ailments like pneumonia if they are left in a wet nest for long.

Thanks!

Our LQS hosts a group of ladies that are making dog beds for the local humane society and using fabric scraps for stuffing. The LQS weekly online newsletter has a reminder from time to time for all sewers to cut their scraps into 2" squares or smaller and bring them into the shop.
We lost my dear mother last year and I 'inherited' her fabric stash, projects etc. and I knew Mom kept her leftovers thru the years but had no idea to what extent. I am still in the process of going thru all the rolled up fabric with a 'string' of the fabric tied around it from (I think) every project my mom ever did. I have spent hours going thru scraps and trying to decide if there was enough of this or that to keep. I have taken in several sacks of scraps and will have several more and still have enough to make myself and my 5 siblings something special from Mom's scraps. |
For the past year or so, I've been cutting my fabric bits into confetti size pieces to use around my plants as mulch.
As I trim squares, I scoop the pieces into a pile and when done trimming, cut through the pile in several directions. They then go into a small waste basket under my cutting table until there are enough to put under the plants. We have some of the most colorful bird nest around since they love my homemade mulch too. |

Great idea, thanks!

Thank you; this is a great idea. And don't forget that cotton fabric snippets and thread... can also be composted. I had been putting it all in the compost for the worms but now I think I'll set some aside for the birds too! Good idea. Thanks for sharing.
