I would like to hear of your experience with the Big Stitch method. I am trying it, and I'm not sure I am succesfully burying my knot.
Do you have any advice for me? |
you make the knot in the end of the thread, stick your needle into one layer of fabric and kind of weave it along an inch into the batting, bring the needle out where you are going to start stitching. pull the thread through giving it just enough tug to pop it into the fabric, it buries into the batting, take a small back stitch at the beginning of stitching.

Gday, I am hand quilting and i think without trying i am getting big stitches, didn't realise there was a technique for it. LOL.

I call it the Utility stitch and I use it on my charity quilts since I have to do so many and I love it. Gives the quilt a nice look of hand stitching and half the time. Sure makes the projects go a lot quicker. Then I go back to a regular ahndstitch quilt and it seems like it takes forever, and I have to fight the urge to make the stitches bigger. LOL

I'm not wild about the look of the big stitch, when I use to hand quilt my stitches were never as small and perfect looking as most. Now I just FMQ.

I am amazed that she says to leave the knot on the back.
I'm using perle cotton, and it is much thicker than the Number 10 crochet thread. If there is a next time, I think I will try that.

I am not a fan of big stitch either. It almost reminds me of those mass produced "hand made" quilts from mail order catalogs. (I can just imagine those poor women who do this for a living, getting pennies per day, and going blind early.). I did it on a baby quilt once, and it was ok, but didn't try it again. It an alternative I'd like to see more of.
