I was wondering if anyone has ever dyed their own fabric, like batiking. I've been researching it online and it sounds interesting. I saw a starter kit for about 50 bucks. I think I may give it a try. That's a sure way to get one-of-a-kind fabric.

Hey, Kathy--keep me posted on this idea! I've a friend who tossed me her collection of dyes and books...even some silk fabric, a couple of beautiful yards of it. But I'm lost on the process and would love to try dying it.

Ladies,
I don't dye, but saw that someone left this site which will be of interest to you: http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/1137-AA.shtml Suz |
Thanks for the reminder, Suz. I had visited that website for Dharma and had them send me their free catalog. It's a wealth of information to "dye" for (couldn't resist that one  !) I may yet work up the courage to make a huge mess with buckets of water and dye.

that's the site that's out of the beginner sets

I use that baggie method of hand dying. My first set just sat around forever while I admired it. Took a long time for me to actually cut into those gorgeous pieces.

Did you find instructions at Dharma or somewhere else?
|
I bought a book from Dharma called baggy method or something. Sorry can't put hands on the book right now, but will post info when I find it.
|
Boo, did you ever find the book or remember the name? I'm still interested.

I'm interested in dying as well...couldn't tell you how many tie dye and batik sites I've read through in the last two weeks.
If you do happen to dye your own fabric, I would buy the "good dye" (can't think of the brand...I'll look up the website for it in a little bit) because if you use an all-pupose dye (Rit, etc) the color won't be as vibrant and a lot of it will wash out after a few times in the washer. I'm sure if anyone here tried to make a Grateful Dead shirt back in summer camp will know what I'm talking about. |
