Have you ever made a homemade thimble?

I had read somewhere about making one out of polymer clay so decided to try it. I bought some Sculpey III and went for it. Of the three I made, one works the other two turned out to small but otherwise would have worked. The little 2oz block I bought will make plenty more so I intend to try again today. It's very fun to trying to create the "perfect" for me thimble. And, there are hoards of colors so you can really get creative!

Has anyone else tried this and if so can you share your experience?

Thanks
Jp

Wish I had a camera I could post pictures with!

I've never tried this, but what a genius idea!!

I make "stuff" with Sculpey often so I'm all set for materials. It does shrink some when you cook it.

Huh....I might have to dig my stuff out and try this! Thimbles never feel comfortable for me and I've tried dozens.

I've never made one, but sounds like a great way to get a thimble that really "fits" you. Did you have a tutorial that you followed? Maybe you could do a tutorial. I'll have to try this.

Thanks for the tip about it shrinking when baked. I have never used Sculpey (or any of the others) before and never considered that it might shrink.

There is a tutorial on the Sculpey website but I just goolged and found a very basic one. I can't post pictures so I can't do a tutorial, probably be a flop anyway, lol.

Years ago I read about a quilter who wrote an article about how she made her own thimbles. As I recall, she asked her dentist for some of his modeling material. She cast her finger in the modeling material, and then there were a couple more steps to the process. Seems to me that the clinic services that make dental crowns would be able to make custom thimbles for us, but I suppose it would be really pricey.....
