I actually have thrown some away for just the reasons that you stated.
Why wouldn't you return it to the shop where you bought it? It certainly isn't doing what you bought it for. In Australia you are entitled to a refund if an item doesn't do the job it is supposed to.
It'll probably be the same way when you put it in a quilt. I'd use it for something else. Maybe make pincushion or something that won't be washed.
I curtainly would not keep it in your stash. Months or years later you might forget about the quality and use it in a project. I would bring it back. If purchased from a quilt shop the owner should appreciate that you brought it to her attention so she will no longer buy from that distributor. If the owner reacts badly then you know she is a bit shady and you don't need to do business there any more. My guess is, you purchased the fabric from Walmart or Ben Franklin's, and not Hobby Lobby or an established quilt shop.
One of my quilt instructors taught us to use long strips of fabrics for yard things. I'd tie up my tomatoes with any fabrics like that....and NEVER let it near a sewing project of ANY kind. I put too much effort into a quilt to trust an unstable fabric in it.
Toss it, shred it, burn it. It is cursed!
I would be tearing it up into strips for rag rugs.
I would make a sandwich with it and use it for practicing FMQ,
I bought a piece of French Provincial beige tone-on-tone in a frenzy to get neutrals for a frien'ds quilt - no realizing that French countryside scenes with sheep was no my medium. I looked at again when I got home - and it went into the donate pile !!
I never put the fabric in the dryer , I always let it dry on a line. But I cannot throw away fabric, bad fabrics I already have used for toyes for the cats or as a pillow when they have they're kittens. But throwing away without using it first no I cannot, I will not use it in a quilt than , but for other things and after a while it can go in the bin.
I would be returning it so they can see what is does. And at the price of fabric these days get an exchange for something else.
Take it back to the store. I bet you'll get the chance to swap it for a different piece of fabric.
I'd rather toss a bad piece of fabric than have it ruin a project.

I have! I bought a bleeder. It bled the first time I washed it, the second time, the third I ironed it after to set the color. Nope, it kept on bleeding. It went into the pile of scraps and salvage I use for fire starter. Waste not.
I put bleeders in with blenders, use them in utility scrap quilts and don't give it another thought. Sometimes adding a large handful or two of salt to the water will help set the color.

I think I would take it back to the shop where you bought it and get a refund. I agree
that it should not have done that and I would not use it in a quilt. As far as it doing differently from the other fabrics, that could be because it wasn't as good a grade as the others. If it came from a quilt shop, it should be quilt shop quality, but if it came from a box store, you never know what you will get. Anyway, take it back and get your money back. :)) Have a Blessed Day! I came dangerously close this wk. Got a new McCall's pattern onsale=$1.00, and Christmas fabric $20.00 w postage. Was making my 16 mo-old GD a dress. Her mother (my DD) took one look and said, " You don't actually expect her to wear that outside the hse, do you?" I was going to pitch it, but loved the fabric so much, I took the dress apart and am making doll clothes and hot pads from it. I'm glad I got her opinion before completing it, so I could put the fab to gd use.

I've enjoyed "hearing" so many things one can do with unwanted fabric. That is one reason I love this board, there is no end to the creative ideas here.
I threw away black fabric that kept shredding. I wasn't going to give it away so that they would have the smae problems.
If you do any applique work, you could use it on something like a wall hanging that would not be thrown in the wash as frequently as a quilt. .... and yes that has happened to me. As a matter of fact, I still have it. It is earmarked for an applique for a wall hanging but that is in my UFO pile at the moment. LOL
:DDiane:D |
I had a fat quarter that I had received in a grab bag from a well known quilt shop. That thing shrank so much. I think it shrank just from looking at it. Out it went. Wouldn't want that in a quilt.

Never.
Never. |
If a fabric is a bleeder -
1) I will try to return it to the store (if I have a sales receipt) - I consider a bleeding fabric defective 2) If I can't return it, I'll discard it. I won't give it to Goodwill or any of those places, because I would not like to have someone else's project mucked up because he/she didn't know any better about fabrics. 3) Cotton burns nicely. Throw it in a fire. If it's very wrinkled - 1) I would try washing it one more time - and see what happens 1a) If it behaves better, use it. 1b) If no better or worse, get it out and away from your good stuff. I think keeping a bad piece of fabric is kind of like keeping a rotten apple with good apples. The one bad piece will just spoil the rest of the project. |

I would use as a dust rag. good Idea!!
I have never thrown any fabric away like that. I guess I have been lucky. Now I would not even consider throwing away any fabric either ir be scraps or crumbs. I save them and give them to one of the ladies in my guild. When she gets enough "scraps" she makes a dog bed and uses that for the stuffing and then she donates the bed to the human services. I keep a small garbage can next to me just for that purpose and I encourage everyone to do the same.
I bought some FQs along with my magazine subscription. The 1st few I washed I could not get to stop running plus when dry they were hard. All went out.
I would try to take it back and get a refund if I could. But yes I have thrown new material away. You can also use the material as a cleaning rag. I also let my husband use material that I don't want to tie his tomatoes up in his garden.
If a fabric keeps bleeding even after you have washed it several times. Does that mean the fabric did not hold the dye? I am just wondering why this would happen.
You'll find a use for it.
I'd Prob put it in recycle pile. What an ordeal! DH has pr black pants like that! I hate washing them!!
nope would NEVER throw away fabric! I would cut in smaller pcs for crumb quilts, or use for fabric postcards, or even give them to a friend who uses scraps for making scrap quilts or dog pillows. I'm way too frugal to just throw it away.
0r give it to the humane society - the animals aren't picky.
My first reaction to the title of this thread was a GASP!! The second reaction was, Heaven forbid I never would!!! Then I read your post....horrible fabric! I think I would even throw that away, and I never throw away the teensiest bit of any fabric. I'd be afraid of it.
Boy, I would sure try returning it. The store may have no idea.
i have some know black that has never soften up and it picks up everything so i just use it in small pieces in quilt projects.
i had to throw fabric away at one time GASP!! but now it would be difficult to do. i make pet pads and give to the animal rescue groups as i know those volunteers come out of their pockets for so much stuff. also the animal rescue groups will take large fabric pieces (they use in pet cages) or donate to a second hand store and someone will buy it or do a pif on this board with the caveat. i'm sure someone will find another purpose for unwanted fabric.

Oh, yes! I have one of those pieces of fabric now...had it for 4 or 5 years...haven't thrown it out...yet....but everytime I see it I'm sorely tempted. It's 6 yds of Kona Black...and I detest the stuff. Brought it home, washed it, dried it and both selvage edges ravelled out the entire 6 yd length. Had to pile the stuff on the bed to fold...it's thick...2-3 times thicker than any 100% cottan fabric I've ever seen and, wrinkled like a dried apple, and has picked up every thread and piece of lint within 3 miles. I've washed 2 or 3 times more - it just keeps wrinkling and picking up lint. Lint rolled it, tried dampening and ironing. It's junk and one of these days I'm gonna toss it.
I always take it back for 2 reasons. The owner, if a small shop would certainly want to know about the problems and not order it again. The other reason is I found they always have told me to pick out another piece of the same price. I usually pay $7 plus (sale price today) for a yard and certainly would not throw $7 away.
