Favorite Fabrics 06-24-2010 03:15 PM

One of my co-workers is going to become a Grandma for the first time in September. :-)

Her daughter picked out the fabrics for a quilt (actually, the entire nursery decor); what she chose were cute jungle animals.

And of course, we all got talking about the trends in nursery decor and we got to wondering about a lot of things:

- is pink for girls and blue for boys a thing of the past?
- are jungle animals the latest thing, for boys and girls?
- are really bright colors in vogue?

We ourselves like pastels, pink & blue, "Precious Moments", Peter Rabbit and the like... but we're all grandma age (or close to it).

And we think we're out of tune with the times!

Well, maybe. We're not quite sure.

So... have you made a baby quilt recently? What kind of theme / colors did you choose? And which generation are you? Mom or Grandma?

Yes, and it was a jungle theme!! LOL

You can see a pix of it on my blog ...

It was a SIMPLE quilt, 5 inch squares with a fleece backing..

I am a tweener  Too old to be a MOM and not yet a Grandma

I have made a few quilts.. lots of nieces and nephews.. the last one was for a girl and had the bright butterflies and lime green  They loved it ...

Another niece did her daughters room in black and white zebra stripes

Different strokes for different folks I guess and yes the times they are changing LOL

Grandma here, I have no answers for you, but will be very interested in the answers you get, because I have been wondering the same thing.

My grandson is only 15 months and DD wanted everything in John Deere. I made his quilt, diaper stacker, sheets and bed skirt for his crib with JD fabric. We drove all over trying to find enough matching for everything.

I always thought it was pale blues/yellows/greens for boys and pinks and white with flowers for girls. But times are changing.

I'm a grandma of 3 (soon to be 4) under 5 years old. I've got 2 grandsons, and a granddaughter. I've made them each a couple of quilts in various colors/styles. I've also made the moms quilts with birth announcements/baby pics. I think everyone likes those the best. :)

I don't know really what the trends are. I make what I think they will like (and what I like). I did one with Laurel Burch Jungle fabric for my great nephew. That was such a beautiful print. For the boys, I did blue/yellow puppies, blue/yellow Snoopy & Woodstock, Pirates that had a lot of tan/green/blue/yellow, etc. For the girl, I did pastels, one with teal/coral mermaids. For the new baby (gender TBD), I hope to do either turtles or frogs and I will tailor it to boy or girl once I find out. I've done pinks/green stars for a baby girl.

I read that babies see black & white first. I only recently started liking black & white. LOL They look great with a few brights mixed in. I found a pattern called Love Bugs that is perfect for the B&W with color. I hope to make that one to keep here and use when they visit.

I personally still think pick is for girls and blue is for boys, however, a jungle theme can go both ways. I have seen a lot of the bright pinks, greens and teals for baby decor themes. I think the brighter colors are "in". My youngest is 5 so it hasn't been too long for me. When my son was born (age 11 now) it was all about Noah's Ark!

When I was pregnant with my DS three years ago, I chose a somewhat jungle-themed set of bedding and decor. It was called "Mommy and Me" and had mama and baby elephants, bears, alligators, giraffes, etc. But it wasn't really in bright colors, more tans, browns, reds and greens, gender neutral.

But I would say that the bright colors and jungle animals are definitely in. Fisher Price has a new line of highchairs, bouncers and the like with a focus on jungle animals. If you ever want to know what's "big" in children's decor, just take a stroll through Toys R Us and you'll see.

I have made several. Last fall I made one sage green with monkeys on it for our granddaughter, course it was for a boy. I embroidered the moneys square with my machine. I have also made a little quilt sort of like overall bill. I didn't question our granddaughter on her colors, it was her decision and I just made the blankets and quilts. From what I understand our little mothers-to-be are using just about everything these days. I know your quilt will be appreciated!!! glenda in texas [email protected]

Oh yes. Too many to count in all colors and themes.
I am a gramma so i was used to pink-girls blue-boys.
Now it seems anything goes, which is good so you have a lot of choices.
