Have you made a quilt in this shape?
1 Attachment(s)
Hi, I attached a photo of a table topper I made based off of a picture I saw on Pinterest. I think I like how the star design looks for a lap quilt, but I am not sure how the shape of the quilt would work for a quilt to be used for a blanket.
Has anyone tried making a larger quilt in this shape? Do you think it would be an awkward shape for a lap quilt? Thank you so much in advance! |
I made a tree skirt in sort of this shape, the center points were much more pronounced making it almost circular. With the proportions of the additional triangles, you basically have a square quilt. Here's a recent discussion on square throws & quilts.

how clever> I love it

Thank you PaperPrincess and Jane Quilter!

The double squares is a fun design, but I can also see the downside of it. Those little "flaps" would be oh-so-tempting to use as "pulls" to pull the quilt up onto oneself. All that extra pulling & tugging in one condensed area would make those triangle pieces more prone to snapped stitches, pulled threads, worn out fabric & batting migration.
If you are planning on a different design (am I the only one who thinks it looks like a flowery swastika???) but still like the 2 squares, I'm wondering if perhaps you could add 4 reinforced sharks teeth to the binding (the corners of the square would then be the same color as the binding) by cutting it extra wide in those parts so that you don't have to worry about batting migration, the fabric would be double thickness & you would only have those small bits sticking out so they wouldn't be as tempting to tug on. |
I love the design, I think I will copycat that!
I could see it as a piknik quilt or similar, maybe as a bed spread? But I personally would hesitate using it as a bedquilt. The little "flap" would be right were my head is, if I would snuggle under it... I think that would result into me constantly tugging the flap under to have a smooth line. @Bree123: interesting, I see little Swastikas in many quilt designs and I am very sensitive to that. This design above doesnt bother me. But I see what you mean! |
@Bree123 and @rainbowcat: I did not notice that shape in there???
Doesn't a Yankee Puzzle block look more like one? https://www.free-quilting.com/detail...428&cat_id=435 |
Is this the Strata Star? I think that may be the name of the pattern.
I haven't made one, but it's on my list. Here's a link to images.... https://www.google.com/search?q=stra...x9Da8Q_AUIBigB |
Bree123 -- that's exactly what I thought when I first saw this quilt. If a quilt pattern has what I think is a swastika in it, I would never use it. But that's just me.

I would try drawing the design seeing if I could create another outside curve section.

very neat like your colors!!!

Interesting design that I think might lend itself better to a table topper or a hot pad. I don't think I'd like it for a "cover" as that point would be poking me and, as another mentioned, too easy to use it consistently to pull it up. I think it would be awkward as a cover
|
I think the points would be annoying on a lap, or larger, quilt.
|
That's different - I like it.

I've made the strata star as a table topper and it was a fun project. In agreeing with Bree about the "flaps", if it is a bed quilt you're thinking of making, maybe you could make it with only three flaps that drape over the sides and the foot of the bed so there wouldn't be one at the pillows? If it is a lap quilt, then I don't think there would be any issue with the shape shown.

I wouldn't use it for a lap quilt but it is pretty.

A swastika is very straight lines an rigid. This is not. This is a star pattern. "Diamonds" intertwined. I would have this as a table topper My neighbor who quilts is Jewish and she has this as a table topper.
