I saw one of these at the Dallas Quilt show last month and have been wanting one ever since. Has anyone used one of these? It would be so cute to use scallops on quilts but also on so many other stitching projects.

Opinions are appreciated. They come in three sizes and aren't cheap so I haven't taken the plunge yet- to buy one.

I got a scallop ruler from Joannes a few years ago and used it once. I was in a gadget buying mood... Anyway, if you use a scallop edge on your quilts alot, this would be handy. However, if you just wanted to try it once, you could:
1. get a long piece of cardboard and draw a straight line across it
2. mark two sides of a lunch plate depending on how deep you want the scallops
3. Line up the marks on the plate with the line on the cardboard and trace.
4. Cut out and use as your template.

Check out "The Large Scallop Radial Rule" by Katie Lane Quilts, it makes scallops from 6in. to 10 in. and is much less money!

I have a scallop ruler by Eleanor Burns. I used it once and it was worth buying even if I don't use it again. I tried the cardboard and saucer way to make scallops and that's just a job. Why anyone would do it that way when there are rulers available that make it so much easier. I used my large circle Go die to circles, cut those in half and sewed them to a border strip. That was even easier!

I have a scallop edged ruler but it's not the one you have shown. I haven't used it a lot but it makes a nice design edge for fleece blankets. Would be cute as a quilting design on a small quilt I think. I got mine on clearance for much less but I've had it quite a while.

What a smart idea...do you have a picture of your finished quilt?

I took a border class and we used freezer paper.... traced the scallops. iron on. cut. super easy

That ruler is only a 1 1/2 inch scallop, which would be pretty small for a quilt of any size other than mug rug or hanging. Would likely make a very pretty edge for a fleece blanket, though.

I'm not so much for gadgets - could be the yankee in me. I would much rather improvise with 'tools' around the house. And, it makes for a much more 'Wow, really? You did that?" kinda conversation.

But that is me. If you are someone that likes gadgets, go for it. No harm done and then you and someone like me has a conversation topic. See, all is good.

Definitely go for the Katie Lane ruler. I find it much easier to use and if you have any questions, Katie Lane staff will help. I love ALL their products. Have met the owner of Katie Lane (Marie) and she is wonderful to deal with. Katie Lane also has gorgeous stained glass quilt patterns, so check these out, too.

June Taylor makes one very simlar to that and isn't that much.

I am with luvTooQuilt on the freezer paper because you can fold the strip of paper until you get the right size scallop for you current project. Just fold the paper strip in half and keep folding until you come out with the perfect size of each scallop. Press on your project/stitch/then trim, that will keep it all stable doing the curves.

I did one quilt with a scalloped edge. I used freezer paper, folded it multiple times to fit the size scallops I wanted and ironed it to the edge of my quilt and then cut the scallops. I'm sure this isn't the best way to describe it but it worked for me.

I also bought one from Missouri Star Quilt Co. I saw her Youtube video and had to have it. It takes out all the math. It's so easy and simple to do. It didn't cost very much. In fact, I accidentally bought two and sent one to a gal on this quilting board.

Eleanor Burn's scallop edge ruler will make any size scallop and will do the wave. Very easy to use...

I've never used one, but would love to have one. Esther the Easter Chicken has a scallop border and I traced mines on the $1chopping mat I brought at Dollar Tree. Thanks for sharing.

The ruler I posted will make a strip that looks kind of like rick rack. I fell in love with it at the Dallas Quilt Show but it was really pricey there and the lady was just a little rude to boot.

I'm really liking all the other rulers I have found through your suggestions. I got a small one from Clotilde that has different sizes but came with no directions. I'm meeting a stitching buddy next week- she'll be able to figure it out. That ruler was only 3.95 so it was worth a try.

I love rick rack! I love gadgets. I'm in deep trouble I think. I sure do like that Eleanor Burns ruler.

Hi, I'v tried a couple of different ones, and I like the eleanor burns the best, plus it has two other patterns that you can do, the wave and the vine.

Joanns has one very similar. Any time I want to buy something like this - I go to Joanns or Hobby Lobby first because you can always find a 40% to 50% off coupon on line. That's the only time I can justify spending the money.

I got one at Joann's and I love it...I love the big fat scallops on the borders. Especially on a 30's or country quilt.
