I have been reading about how to go over thick seams such as Jeans. I am going to show a link for an example...you can use this technique, but instead of buying this gadget...you just need to use your sewing needle case...the white backing..cost nothing....oh of course you had to buy the needles...Happy Sewing!!!http://sewfordough.wordpress.com/200...gwhat-is-that/

I hit mine with a hammer to flatten the seam. I know it sounds odd, but it works.

I've had a jean-a-ma-jig for years, love it!

Thankfully, my Husqvarna came with a little widget to do this. It is very, very useful.

Hitting it with a hammer? That's a tailors trick. Spritz with water, press, and hit it with a hammer. Sew right over it. And the Jean-a-ma-jig works too.

Just when you thought you had heard of everything....now I need a hammer for my sewing room!!

Just another one of hubby's tools to make its way into my room! I laughed the other day i bought a pivot screwdriver and showed it to him and he told me he needs to check my room whenever he needs tools cuz i am accumulating quite a few in there!

Yes. this is exactly how I was taught to hem jeans. Give it a few whacks with a hammer. I also have a Tailor's Board, a wooden pressing tool. Looks kind of like a sleeve board, but has no padding and a point to really press points. It's also shaped so you can use it to hammer seams. I think we called it 'clapping' seams. Used to make my husband's suits. Sheesh, what a lot of work, but we were totally broke. Remember hand feathering rolled lapels...

i did alterations in a shop for many years and used the jeanamajig all of the time but you are right the needle case would work too. I have used the hammer trick many a times a hammer is always in my sewing room as well a pair of needle nose pliers.

That's what I do too! I learned that when I worked in an alterations shop in Bend.

The jean-a-ma-jig use to be a free hand out and came free in the mail in the ads for sewing books. I would toss them along with the free hara marking tool that was also free and came in the mail all the time with quilting ads, in my notion stash box. I couldn't believe it when I saw the Jean a jg for sale for $4.99 at a quilt shop.
